Family Christian is a great resource for all things summer. Whether you’re looking for a great read, a new short sleeve t-shirt, or a cool water bottle, you can find it online or at one of their many nationwide stores! One book you might consider snagging is If I Plug My Ears, God Can’t Tell Me What To Do.
This slim paperback brings to mind the days when I used to stick my fingers in my ears and say, “la la la la laaaaaa” so I couldn’t hear my brother taunting me. Except in this case, it’s God prodding me to step out in faith. Things are changing in our house right now, and it’s a little bit outside of my comfort zone. My home is in complete disarray as we try to pack for a big move. Will I continue to work at my same job? Will my kids attend the same schools? Where will we go to church? Can we afford all of this? The fear is starting to build. My husband keeps reminding me to have faith, and God is whispering to my heart. Still, my head is screaming in complete panic. If I Plug My Ears was a good-for-me-right-now kind of book. The message spoke to my inner child, reminding me to let go of the problems of the past. The scriptural references were relevant to my daily life, for the most part, and I could answer the reflection questions without missing a beat. Jessie Clemence has a down to earth writing style that makes this book seem more like a chat over hot tea rather than a devotional. The biggest takeaway for me — change in attitude. I felt like my fears were my way of giving in to a bad attitude. It’s not acceptable to have fear when you are trusting God to guide you through. The two cannot co-exist. I’m making the conscious choice to unplug my ears, listen more carefully to the Holy Spirit, and live these moments that I’m given with the grace of one who has been saved.
