Teaching 6th graders means that you must have a rhino-like thick skin. Kids are brutally honest, even when they’re trying to be kind and sweet. I’ve been teaching this grade for 18 years, and it keeps me young. Sometimes I forget that I’m not that 23-year-old first year teacher anymore because the kids are still 11. Every once in a while, they remind me by commenting about something I’ve said — “Who’s Mighty Mouse?” is a favorite. Then there was the day when one of my well-meaning charges told me how much she liked my hair. “I like your highlights!” she gushed. I was confused for a moment, since I hadn’t been to the salon in ages. Then I realized that she meant my GRAY STREAKS. She thought I did that on purpose. Oh, my heart. I have to wonder if the women in this ad felt a little bit like that. Some things are more important than hair, though. When you need an insurance claim to be quickly handled, a stylist might not be your best bet. An Aflac policy, which pays cash benefits, can help you get out of a bind. Consider their supplemental insurance policies, which pay out regardless of other insurance you might hold. Aflac is insurance for daily living….kind of like that styling emergency.  Their new One Day Pay promise makes sure that your life doesn’t get off track due to an unexpected setback.  After all, isn’t that why you buy insurance?

Here are a few tips to make sure that you don’t have a hair SOS moment, too!
1. If you don’t have time to touch up those roots, try switching your part to the other side. Bonus: It can add more body to your style, too.

2. Wear a headband or even a scarf for a day, while you wait for the salon appointment.

3. Try coloring your hair at home. I’ve been doing this for several months with great results. My hair color is shipped directly to my house on a subscription basis, so I don’t even have to worry about running out to the store to get it. I started doing that right after my sweet student commented about my highlights!

4. Ask a friend to be your color buddy. You can color her hair, then afterwards she can do yours!

5. Try a wash-in gloss. The shine will help to offset the gray. You’ll only need to use this every few days, so the bottle should last a while.

Take it as a compliment. They liked your hair. It does look good. Keep smiling, too. I color my hair, and it can be hard when you start to show. You do worry and notice. It feels like everyone is looking at your part. Good tip about changing up your part and style.

  2. Not sure where you live, but around here younger people are dying their hair gray. You probably were the height of fashion to that girl! 🙂 If only these teenagers around here would know that when they really do get gray hair, they won’t want it. lol

  3. I like my hair with the silver highlights. Getting more and more of them.

  4. A headband is a great tip! Thanks for sharing – I don’t do highlights, but my mom does.

  5. All of your tips for gray hair are very good. I really like your tip on trying a Wash-in Gloss. There are also Color Rinses that have no peroxide and washes out as you shampoo your hair.

These are great tips. I love your hair and the grays really looked like highlights.

  7. My hair sparkles. I like it.

  8. I have those same highlights

  9. Got my hair cut today and I swear that cutting gives me more white hairs.

  10. I admire your perseverance in teaching for so many years! That’s so many young ones you helped educate and prepare for the adult world!

  11. I have dyed my hair for many years. I was then in a bad accident and was in the hospital for a couple month. When I got out of the hospital I was shocked by how awful my hair looked. Now I am back to highlights because it can cover up a lot of grey as well as does not grow out all gross.

  12. Oh I once had a really bad mess up with my hair! Oh boy!

  13. I’ve never heard of a wash-in gloss. I’ll have to look for that. I use your trick of switching up the part to hide the gray. Unfortunately, the last few years, the grays are now showing up at my hairline. Thanks for sharing your funny story about one of your students.
