If you’re like me and still crying over Matthew Crawley, take heart. M’Lady’s Book of Household Secrets might not change the events of Season 2 but it will certainly fill your heart with all things Edwardian. This book is compiled from the “House Books” that were a fashionable way for women to share their tips and secrets. In particular, the contents of the book came from Lady Talbot of Lacock Abbey and Lady Louisa Conolly of Castletown House. Those names just sound romantic, don’t they?! The book is filled with all kinds of little delights, such as tips for planting herbs and how to keep one’s lips attractive for men. Now don’t giggle. There are also some practical modern suggestions including ways to make natural household cleaners. I loved the little illustrations throughout these pages. If you’re so inclined, you could even attempt the recipe for Garlic Soup or Golden Cordial. That is, if you are able to obtain stoned raisins. I have no idea what they are, but they sound good. With just enough historical tidbits to keep things interesting, this little book is the perfect thing for your favorite Downton Abbey fan.

I have tons of household tips and tricks books but nothing like the M’Lady’s Book of Household Secrets. I’m very interested in the herbal remedies and gardening. I never knew such books existed and to know that few have survived makes for an interesting read. Winning this book may give me the opportunity to turn my home into somewhat of a grand house.
My favorite thing to buy on Amazon is e-books. I love being able to instantly read the books I have purchased. I don’t mind waiting for them to arrive in the mail but I get antsy.

Oh wow, this book is right up my alley. For some reason I have always been super-interested in how women lived a century and more ago. I love to read about their household rituals and beliefs, and compare how some things are so different now, and how others stay the same. I hope I win, but if I don’t I will put this book on my “to buy” list.
