What to do with the homemade laundry detergent that didn’t work out

What to do with homemade laundry wash that didn't work out?

After my favorite natural laundry wash site stopped selling their product, I decided to give homemade laundry soap a try.  My first batch smelled amazing, but the formula was a bit too harsh for sensitive skin.  Our whole family itched and scratched until I finally conceded.  I’ve since found a recipe that works for us, but what to do with all that extra detergent that didn’t work out?  Here’s how I’ve been using it!

What to do with the homemade laundry soap that didn't work out?

It makes a great cleaner for my glass top stove.  VibraWipe Microfiber Cloth sent me some samples, so I used one to scrub the surface with just a bit of detergent.  It’s abrasive enough to release caked-on leftover goop, but doesn’t scratch up the glass.  These cloths are absorbent, which makes them an excellent choice for keeping in the kitchen.  I’ve been using them in place of paper towels. Their sturdy construction holds up well to frequent washing, too.  I keep a stash of these in the kitchen drawer, right next to the bin of defunct laundry soap.

It also works well for cleaning my bathroom sink and shower.  Remember the post about using the period pad to clean my sink? I wasn’t kidding — it really works!  A little sprinkle of this homemade detergent, a light scrub, and the bathroom is clean as a whistle.

My favorite use, though, is for the kitchen sink.  I’ve been buying Barkeeper’s Friend for the sink ever since our housekeeper recommended it years ago.  While the housekeeper has gone, the Barkeeper’s Friend was a staple in my kitchen cupboard until I figured out that my homemade soap worked just as well.  It’s much more economical, plus I used natural ingredients so it’s safer for my family, too!

Have you ever tried making homemade laundry detergent?

How innovative and creative you are!!! That is really smart to find another use for all the detergent instead of throwing it out. We try to do that with our “fails,” too, but I don’t think I would have thought of this. Great post and gets you thinking about other products and their uses.

  2. You really have a knack for making something out of nothing, very creative. I must say that I was thrown off about the period pad idea, haha. Good write-up Dede.

  3. I have had a failed batch of homemade laundry detergent before. I wish I would have thought of using it like this I was so frustrated it hadn’t worked. Remembering this for next time!

  4. Good for you for trying to make it in the first place and then finding another use! I’ve made some natural products with failing results, but the floor gets cleaned!

Love it! It’s perfect. A cleaner that was a “fail” turning into a cleaner for something else. Good for you to think outside of the box instead of throwing it out.

  6. Ooh, I love the idea about just using it as a scrub. I’ve made homemade fabric softener but my washer doesn’t work with powder, I’ve always wanted to make homemade detergent but hearing it’s harsh makes me feel less upset about not being able to. 🙂

  7. Great lemonade you made with the lemons of unsuitable cleaner.

  8. You know I have never tried making it because I always thought it would be too messy and not work as well. Plus, I would hate to have what happened with your first batch. However, knowing that it wouldn’t go to waste makes a huge difference and maybe I’ll give it a try!

  9. It’s a great idea to reuse it instead of throwing it out. Great idea!
