I received a copy of this book to review. The opinions expressed here are 100% mine.

I have a bad habit of reading reference books from cover to cover. It happened again with Homegrown Herbs. Just look at the cover. It is Pinterest worthy, is it not? I just want to smell every photo and taste each concoction. Gardeners, consider yourself warned. Your families won’t see you for days after reading this book. You’ll be too busy to bathe or eat because you’ll be searching for places to sow these seeds of wisdom in your garden.

While I have been busy in my vegetable garden this summer, my herb garden has been miserably neglected. The once prolific parsley and basil plants struggled along while I’ve been distracted by snow peas and spinach. Homegrown Herbs by Tammi Hartung got my attention, though. Never before did I consider growing my own poppy seeds or tossing the nasturtiums petals into a salad. The charts throughout the book are immensely helpful in organizing information. I loved the vivid pictures that allowed me to see exactly how to perform the described tasks.

I love using natural and homeopathic remedies for common ailments. Silly me, I never thought about growing and harvesting my own echinacea. Using hollyhocks for medicinal purposes gives me another reason to grow these old-fashioned beauties. Normally I keep my books in pristine condition but I couldn’t help myself this time. I dogeared pages, highlighted plant names, and wrote notes in the margins of this book as though it were a textbook.  I ordered many seeds based on the ideas in this book and purchased even more plants at the garden center.  This is a must-have book for the home gardener, no matter how big your green thumb is.

The recipes….oh, the recipes!   There’s a reason why this book has an unblemished 5-star rating on Amazon.  The recipes in this book are just divine.  I love the idea of using my garden produce to make delicious meals for my family, and this homespun cookbook was a wonderful change from the ordinary.  If you’re interested in reading books that can teach you new tricks, check out Homegrown Herbs.  It’s available at Storey Publishing and at bookstores nationwide.

Thanks for the article, and introducing me to an interesting new book. I haven’t been growing herbs the last two years because I’m living in an apartment and have nowhere to do it, but I’d be very interested in this book because of its many recipes, both for food, teas, and herbal tinctures.

I told my son about this book and he thinks it would be one that his girlfriend would love! Woo hoo! She is so very hard for me to shop for as her tastes are so different than mine and well, she has more money. But this is affordable!

I am a big believer in Herb remedies. My wife, daughters and grand-kids have been helped through herbs and vitamins more than through prescription drugs.
