Now that November is here, it’s time to think about holidays for real.  There’s no ignoring at this point.  We have family and friends all over the world, so I always try to send a photo card at Christmas. That way, our loved ones can see how much my kids have grown over the year!   My kids’ school pictures didn’t turn out great this year so we’ll be heading to the photo studio for some family pics.  Here are the things I try to consider when buying the holiday outfits that the kids will wear in our holiday photos.  Holiday Outfits - what to look for! savingsinseconds.com #ad

1.  What colors do you want to include?

You don’t have to stick with traditional red-and-green.  Try branching out with blues, whites, and even purple.  You could also go with a theme (snowflakes, for example.)  Holiday styles for girls can be exciting!  For the boys, consider coordinating colors so that the photo looks streamlined but not too matchy-matchy.

2.  Can the outfit be worn throughout the winter?

I am not a fan of one-time wear.  When I’m shopping for a holiday outfit, I try to get something that my children will wear multiple times throughout the season.  With a dress, you could add a cardigan and a pair of sparkly shoes to make it perfect for school or church.   A boy’s zip up cardigan is perfect throughout all of winter.

3.  Can the outfit be passed down?

Recycling clothes is a great way to stretch the clothing budget!  For years I sold my kids’ outgrown clothing on eBay or consignment sales.  In the past few seasons, I’ve just passed them along to friends.  Either way, I want to know that the clothes I buy are high-quality and durable so they’ll stand up to multiple times of wear.  Brands like Tea Collection might seem out of budget, but when you calculate the number of years the clothes can be worn it really is affordable!

4.  What kind of background will you use?

When selecting the outfit, consider the type of background you’ll use in the photo. This is true whether you take the photo yourself or go with a professional studio.  If the background will be well-lit and bright, your outfit choices will stand out more.  If the holiday photos are more of a Christmas morning theme, you might want to go with matching pajamas or snowball-fight outfits.  Don’t be limited by dressy choices!

5.  Can the whole family be in the photo?

Holiday collections are available at some children’s boutiques, but it can be difficult to find sizing for everyone. If you plan to include mom, dad, and/or pets, it might be easier to go with a casual theme.  T-shirts and jeans are easy to coordinate.  If you feel that you need to add a winter element to the outfit, give each family member a scarf/mittens set or a toboggan.  These small details will give the photo a unified theme.  You can also do a tongue in cheek photo by creating a scenario with the photo!  My creative friends have made themed cards using all kinds of pop culture, from the National Lampoon’s Christmas movie to a Star Wars Christmas.

  1. Those are such cute outfits! Yes, we plan ahead what we will wear for Christmas Day when we take lots of pictures!

Good points. You want coordinating so the colors and background don’t clash. A good holiday feel and think a bout kids comfort. You don’t want them really uncomfortable or feeling awkward or photo won’t work. I buy a dress and dress shirt for my grand kids. Buying on clearance after the holidays can be a great way to save money.

  3. I don’t have any tips for finding the best holiday outfits, but I do associate certain colors with certain holidays. I associate red and green with Christmas, pastels with Easter, black and orange with Halloween, and shades of brown and white with Thanksgiving. Of course you don’t have to stick to these color associations, you’ll probably get more wear out of an outfit if you pick other colors.

If we are having holiday pictures, we like to try to match. For the kids I look for something that looks good, but has to be comfortable. How can anyone enjoy the holidays in outfits that are uncomfortable. We seem to have happier kids when we do that.
