You might be familiar with the new Response to Intervention (RTI) program in public schools.  This helps students get extra reading and math help to bridge learning gaps.  A social-emotional learning (SEL) component was recently established. This takes place at the classroom level, not just through a guidance counselor.  At our school, we incorporate SEL discussions in the regular classroom.  Books like Henry is Kind (9/2018; Hardcover $16.95; ISBN: 978-0884486619; Grades K-5; 32 pages)a classroom-tested resource for social and emotional learning, provide a great resource for facilitating student discussions.

In this story, Henry’s class is encouraged to participate in “mindfulness practice.”  Was that a term you heard when you were in school?  I love that Ms. Snowden, the teacher, makes “heartfulness” a concrete concept.  Students internalize loving thoughts, then they demonstrate kindness to others.  When Henry has a hard time with this topic, his classmates comfort him by remembering the ways he helped them.
The story is perfect for early elementary students.  It would also be appropriate for student groups who are already practicing SEL ideas.  The message of “sending kind thoughts” is more politically correct than words like prayer, yet yields similar good vibes.  I like the text layout of the pages.   It’s very readable, and the illustrations provide support for challenging words.

Another educational initiative that’s been going on for a while — inquiry-based learning!  This model encourages students to explore science concepts through adventure and experimentation. The Acadia Files: Book Two, Autumn Science (9/2018; Hardcover $13.95; ISBN: 978-0884486046; Grades 4-7; 88 pages) features five fall-themed stories.  This was my first time reading The Acadia Files, although there is a book one available.
I really like the format and layout of Autumn Science.  The chapters, printed on glossy full-color pages, are entirely text-based.  Academic vocabulary words such as chlorophyll and nocturnal will catch kids’ attention, while there’s enough humor (zombies and dinosaur pee tea) to make this relatable to elementary students.
The end of each chapter lets readers peek into Acadia’s journal and actions.  The pages highlight things like a town council letter, experiments, photos, and Acadia’s handwritten questions.  Books like this spark curiosity and inspiration!   Perfect for the homeschool curriculum as well as any classroom bookshelf, The Acadia Files is a great way to start kids on the path to STEM learning.
Though I’m a National Board Certified teacher with 21 years of classroom experience, this is my first time working with Tilbury House Publishers.  I’m excited to share their educational books with you!
