Replacing household products with green substitutes

Like a professional lock-picker, our very active 4 year old can get into just about anything. It makes me nervous to have any toxic chemicals around the house. We try to turn to green cleaners and household products whenever possible but sometimes there aren’t many effective green options. A few weeks ago when our shower drain got clogged (thanks to 2 long-haired girls who live here) we needed a drain opener. I was surprised to find a natural drain opener at Unique products! They sent me some products to try and I wanted to share the results with you.

The slow drain is a problem that gets on my nerves. On busy mornings, we have consecutive shower time so there’s not a moment to spare. We also have houseguests quite often, and I dont want them to experience the slow drain problem. Luckily this fix came on a summer day so w e weren’t rushed. I poured the drain opener straight into the tub, plugged it, and let the solution sit overnight. In the morning I took the plug out and let the liquid drain through. It didn’t completely work the first time, so I poured more into the drain. It cleared the drain enough that the water no longer drained slowly. Will it be a permanent fix? Unique products claims that if it’s used on a regular basis for maintenance, the drain won’t clog anymore! It’s worth a try, and I am thankful that I don’t have to worry about the toxicity of the solution. Just for peace of mind, I would like to see a child proof cap on the bottles. Right now they are the basic twist-off cap and I know my son could open it if he decided to do so.

Easy to use and safe, too. savingsinseconds.com

  1. Great product! I’ve never heard of it but love that it is natural! much safer with kids!

  2. I have tried these and they work great!

  3. I have purchased greener products and made my own green cleaners. I am really making a point to look at labels and watch what kind of chemicals I bring into my home–trying to reduce them as much as possible!

  4. I need to try this! I’ve managed to replace everything from window cleaner to laundry bleach with healthy, homemade alternatives – but I *can’t* get my drain unclogged! (Stupid postpartum shedding!!!) If this works it would be a lifesaver!

I try to buy green products whenever possible. I’d love to do more homemade concoctions, but there just never seems to be enough time to get it done. I usually buy the green brands for my laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid and paper products.

Never heard of this but might have to try it, my long hair clogs up everything. I switched to making my own green cleaners.
