Public Service Announcement:
If you read A Harvest of Thorns, plan to devote several days to your reading displeasure.

That’s right.  You’re going to be made uncomfortable by this book.  Why?  You’ll be absorbed in the web of deceit and, yes, consumer guilt.  The book itself is so engrossing that you won’t be able to take your eyes off it!  The story line is complex and compelling.   It was a rather tedious read at times, only because I’m used to more shallow stories.  Harvest of Thorns is deep, real, and more than a little scary because it hits close to home.  You’ll be reminded of Erin Brockovich and Flint, Michigan when you read about the Davids who attacked Goliath in this book.

Close to home, you say.  How could Bangladesh be close to home, unless you’re actually IN Bangladesh?  The thing is that Harvest of Thorns tells a frightening story about the very real fashion industry and its casualties.  Hopefully we’re all wearing clothes, yet many of those garments are produced in factories much like the one in the book.  Though it’s a work of fiction, this tragic tale moved my heart.  It made me consider the way I shop.  I read the ingredients on food labels….why am I not as concerned about clothing tags?  That will be on my heart for a long time to come.

My biggest pet peeve with Harvest of Thorns is that the book summary gives so much away!  I don’t want to know more than a general introduction when I open a new book.  It’s wishful thinking, right?  Legal dramas aren’t my typical pick for books, and this one didn’t really convert me.  I wasn’t impressed by the profanity and adult scenes in the story….but I can say with certainty that I’ll be a more considerate consumer in the future.
