Disclosure: I am a Tommy Mommy and receive free books to read. Opinions shared are mine.

If you’re not a parent of a young child, you may not realize why board books are so special. These books tend to be more durable for little hands, because the covers, and pages, are made of a thick cardboard.  The chunky page is easier for small fingers to grip and turn.  Here are some reasons to stock your gift closet with board books, no matter who is reading books in your home!

Good Night God #giveaway

  1.  It’s nice to have board books on hand for unexpected visitors.  If a friend drops by and brings a grandchild along, do you have items in your home to entertain the little one? A board book or two is a great way to keep kids happy.
  2.  Older kids can practice sketching illustrations by using board books.  They can also practice shading and other features to improve artistic ability.
  3.  The young writers who visit can explore the types of rhyme and verse that is demonstrated in the pages of a board book.  Encourage them to pay attention to the details, such as the font and color of the text on the pages.
  4.  If you don’t want to keep board books in your home, they make wonderful gifts for the nursery at your church or local daycare.

One great example is the Good Night, God board book!   This sweet story is part of the Really Woolly library, which I’ve seen in the past. I liked that the book featured poems and verses that can be read all at once, or one per day.   The strong message of God’s protective love comes through with these rhymes.  I also loved the cute illustrations, which features barnyard animals as small children.  You can really use the poems to talk with older siblings about how the ideas relate to them. For example, with the prayer “God Makes You Strong,” you can ask your child what makes him worry, and explain how God protects him from things that cause fear.

Enter to win a copy of this board book in the April Showers hop. The contest is open to US readers ages 18+. Void where prohibited by law. Good luck!
