Getting kids involved in activities

The “age” range I best understand is the middle grades.  Seventeen+ years teaching 6th grade has given me a bit of experience in that regard.  Time and again it’s been my observation that children who are involved in an activity (other than just regular academics during the school day) are the most successful students.  Sure, there are examples to that rule.  For the most part, though, children who are invested in the school beyond the four main classes tend to develop time management skills, social skills, and general interest in the overall school community.   So now to figure out how to do that!

Now that the new school year is underway, it’s tough to squeeze in any new activities.  If you are a parent, you  might be tempted to go one of two routes:  Overkill on extracurriculars or avoid them altogether.  It’s really difficult to find a happy  medium.   Normally I suggest finding one activity that each child loves and limiting the commitments to allow for homework time.  However, I find myself breaking my own rule when it comes to that.   It’s hard to narrow down my kids’ interests to one area (sports?  church?  organizations?)  and don’t we want well-rounded kids, after all?

My recommendation is that you find one activity to start.  Develop your child’s talents by offering unique opportunities to nurture the skill.  For example, if your child is interested in fashion, you could find ways to foster that creativity.  Provide sketch books and coloring pencils.  Teach your child to use a sewing machine and pinking shears.  If you’re located in New York, there’s a cool opportunity for Fashionistas!  ModCloth issued an all-call invitation.  Come showcase your unique style at their #FASHIONTRUTH Casting Call for ALL event in New York City on September 3rd.  Mark your calendar because it’s THIS WEEK!!!    Show up in your cutest outfit and you could be featured on ModCloth and across their social platforms.  What a great opportunity to network!   If you’re in the area, grab your friends and go — this is an event you won’t want to miss! Head to the ModCloth blog for more details and RSVP info.

Whatever your child’s interests, take the time to nurture and grow that talent.

It’s good for kids to be actively involved in activities. I’m glad that you see it helping with school, too. It can also help kids find themselves….likes, friends, some independence.

Good point on not overloading on activities. Try to find a balance. You don’t want your children rushing from one “fun” thing to the next with no time to relax and enjoy some quiet time. Plus, it overwhelms them and you.

My grandkids are homeschooled, and it is very important that they also have outside activities and activities of their own. My grandson has gotten into Boy Scouts, and my son participates. This helps with bonding, builds my grandson’s self-esteem, and helps him to stay interested in being there.
