My very first “real” teaching job was in a middle school. I taught Math most of the day, plus one period of Spanish class. Those were the days before Common Core and TCAP testing. Since it was the first time Spanish was taught in the middle school, I was able to develop my own curriculum and activities. It was so much fun! I loved sharing basic vocabulary words with my students. They enjoyed it, too! In the years since the Spanish year, many of those former students have told me how much they enjoyed that class. Part of the success was that I tried to make learning Spanish a fun experience.  Now, it’s obvious that this would be a great activity for a Spanish-speaking student to practice geography skills.  However, what about letting your English-speaking child play with it?

By incorporating simple games and challenges, students often didn’t even realize they were learning. I loved setting out things like a puzzle or card game in a Spanish version. When I had the chance to review the GeoToys Geopuzzle (Spanish version) it made me think about those early days in my Spanish class. My students would have enjoyed playing this puzzle. This is a great activity because it takes the unfamiliar (Spanish vocabulary) and presents it in a familiar way (world puzzle). The pieces are sturdy and chunky; they’re perfect for little hands to hold. The colors on these puzzle pieces are bright and glossy. My son enjoyed playing with it! You probably know that puzzles are a great way to teach spatial skills. I also worked with my son on observation skills as he played. We looked for similar colors, edges and corners, and easy-to-find designs like the compass rose. With an older child, you could ask questions such as, “What countries border the United States?” or “What is the name of the ocean that borders the east coast of Africa?”

  1. We have a puzzle like this in English, and it is an excellent way for the kids to learn geography.

This is a great way for kids to learn geology. Actually, I could use this to help with my geology. The different colors keep the countries fresh and help you place them.

Middle school math – what a brave way to start! 🙂 I bet it really gave you an understanding of kids and teaching and helped you get to where you are today.

  4. Wonder if they came out with new ones now
