How does free cell phone service sound? I’ll tell you!! It sounds like Scratch Wireless.
If you walked into a typical middle school anywhere in the US, chances are good that the majority of the students will have a cell phone or a similar electronic device. For the world in which we live, this interconnectedness is really necessary. We have so many children going home to an empty house because both parents work. Many households have eliminated the landline in exchange for dual cell phones. With after school activities, overnight trips, and divorced families, kids need a way to get in touch with their parents in an emergency. Many of my friends have complained about the pricey bills received after their children overextended the data plan or text limits. There’s got to be a better way, right?
Scratch Wireless offers a plan that utilizes Wi-Fi instead of your expensive data plan. By using Internet connections that are already available to you, the phone can send texts, access the Internet, and make phone calls for free. Zilch. Zero dinero. Purchase the phone, activate your account, and you’re good to go. Think about it; in the past 24 hours, how much time did you spend in an area that had Wi-Fi access? For those moments when you’re not near a Wi-Fi hotspot, you can set up your phone to kick in through Sprint’s network. With this, you have the option to purchase a 24-hour pass ($1.99) or a 30-day pass ($14.99). This also translates to “NO CONTRACT.” Music to my ears!! If you have an issue, just contact the good people at Scratch Wireless. Their customer service is phenomenal! When I had technical difficulties setting up my phone (derr…I’m a little technology-challenged, in case you didn’t know) I had a response PRONTO.
I gave the phone to my daughter to use on a Friday when I had an all-day teacher inservice. While she was with the babysitter, she texted me periodically to let me know what they were up to. At one point, when they were at the movies, she texted:
“In theater now. Have popcorn. This is GREAT.”
Knowing that I can connect with her anytime, anywhere, is worth every penny to me. It’s even better that we don’t have to spend a penny to stay connected.
How much would Scratch Wireless save you per month?
This would really work for some families and people. I love how your daughter texted you to give updates. How cute that even at the movies she bragged and checked in. 🙂

We only have one basic cell phone and it seems pretty expensive to me. I love the idea of using wifi when available and the month pass is amazingly cheap! Scratch would save me $40 a month!
It’s cool that your daughter was able to access wifi at the theater to text you! My niece has a cell phone really only for emergencies. She has two friends she texts, at home, but only has her phone when she is away from an adult. I’d love to learn more about Scratch’s phones and parental controls (we also do not allow transmission of photos on her phone.)
Not allowing the photos thing is SO SMART. My daughter has that limitation on hers. She knows that I will also check her texts/calls if needed. She’s pretty responsible though, and really only uses it when she’s away from me.
Never heard about this company before. I like that it offers free unlimited texting.
This might be just the thing for my husband and I! He may be retiring soon and doesnt want a cell phone but I insist he have something.
