Last week, I ordered several of these kitchen organizing bins to place inside the shelves of our kitchen island. When the first one arrived, I eagerly filled it with individual snack packs so my kids could easily make their own lunches.  Unfortunately, once the bin was full, I tried to put it on the shelf.  Uh-oh. I didn’t measure, and it didn’t fit. Frustrated, I set the bin on the floor by the cabinet and have grumbled about needing more space for our food.  So shameful, right?  I didn’t even think about it. Then I read No Longer A Slumdog and was totally humbled.

Savingsinseconds.com Did I really complain about having too much food?  Did I really whine about my tile-floor kitchen with cabinets full of clean dishes and other “essentials”?   The people described in this book would consider my life a fantasy.  The biggest crack on my spoiled heart came when I read about the little girl (about 10 years old) begging for pennies to buy bread for her hungry brother.   My mind instantly went to my own daughter; what if that were my child, desperate for food but putting her brother’s needs before her own?  Then there was the story of Nadish, who was kidnapped and forced into slavery.  These stories will not just move your heart.  I hope they’ll also move you to pray for these children, and perhaps take action in a meaningful way.  The writing in this book reminds me of The Watchtower periodicals.  It has the same writing style and similar images throughout the pages.

No Longer a Slumdog also addresses the harsh effects of the caste system on the Indian general public. I found it to be strongly biased toward the spiritual and emotional needs of the poverty-stricken; however, I wonder what the ministry intention is for the upper castes.  Surely they need the gospel just as badly!  Like similar organizations, the Gospel for Asia Bridge of Hope ministry helps generous donors sponsor a child for $35 a month. It’s amazing that such a sum can provide education, meals, clothing, and other basic needs for children.  I would like to see an alternative to the ongoing sponsorship for those who want to give but are unable to commit on a long-term basis.  Perhaps a one-time donation section could be made available for those who feel led to send a little something.  Additionally, I was unable to ascertain the doctrine that Gospel for Asia uses in their biblical teachings.  While it’s wonderful that these missions support people in desolate, impoverished situations, I would like to know that my donation would be used to support a ministry that shares my beliefs.

Wow! What touching and heartbreaking stories. We often joke about our “first world problems;” we have no idea what so go through. Not to lessen our problems, I know God is there no matter how “big” or how “small.”

  2. Gotta love a free book. Thanks for the tip!
