My sister recently told me that she loves the tv show Switched at Birth. I haven’t seen it, but am familiar with the basic story line. Fans of the show might be interested in a similar book series called The Amish of Summer Grove by Cindy Woodsmall. In the series, two young women discover they were switched at birth. The big difference here, though, is that one girl has been raised in an Amish household!  You can imagine the culture shock, right? I received the second book in the series, titled Fraying at the Edge.  Having read books by Cindy Woodsmall before, I was so quick to click submit that I told myself it wouldn’t matter that this was the second book in the series.  Skipping to book 2 usually doesn’t bother me, and Fraying at the Edge has enough backstory to help me catch up.  However, I really felt like I missed a vital connection with the characters.  The two girls, Ariana and Skylar, have moved back to their “biological” parents’ homes and things don’t go very smoothly.  In the best of times, young adults don’t often want to live at home.  Having to move to a completely new place…..with a strange, unfamiliar lifestyle….would be miserable for anyone.

The thing that struck me so hard was the harshness of both sets of parents.  I couldn’t believe how selfish Nicholas behaved.  Isaac seemed unreasonable.  Skylar’s spoiled attitude got on my nerves.  Even Ariana’s helplessness bugged me.  If I’d read book one, those characters probably would have seemed like old acquaintances with quirks I’d learned to tolerate.  Instead, I just found myself sneering most of the time.  I needed to like those characters before disliking them.  The story itself was highly engaging; the idea of the switched births was almost like an interesting psychological experiment.  It was the characters I couldn’t get over.

I wanted to like Fraying at the Edge. Maybe sometime I’ll take the plunge and read the first book in the series just to see if my suspicions about the character thing pans out.
