There’s something so intriguing about space. That unknown frontier is still a mystery and inspiration to all of us. Even from a young age, children are enamored with looking up into the sky and wondering about the great beyond.  If you have a child who likes to fly high, here are some gift ideas that will delight, entertain, and educate your little flyer!

The first gift my son asked for this Christmas was a remote controlled helicopter.  We got one when he was only 3 years old and he loved playing with it; unfortunately it crash-landed and didn’t work properly after that.  This year he’ll receive the Silverlit Nano Falcon.  This heli is especially cool because it’s a record-holder for the smallest RC copter.

This helicopter weighs less than 11g.  The compact charging dock is especially handy because this little guy will be getting a lot of playtime at our house!  The package says that it contains replacement parts which I haven’t seen in other toys.  That’s a huge plus for me.  My husband will enjoy flying the Nano Falcon with our son, so it’s truly a great family toy.

Nanoblock toys help your child flex the imagination muscles! featured on savingsinseconds.com #giftguide

Nanoblock offers some amazing kits for kids who like to play with blocks. These tiny toys are completely addictive.  I even wanted to open these up and play with them!  I was impressed by the variety of kits available on the Nanoblock site.   These toys also pump up the educational potential with a whole selection of “sites to see” including the moai of Easter Island!  The high flyer options include unusual choices like the Red Baron tri-plane and a WWII fighter plane.  Nanoblocks are beneficial for building fine motor skills; any opportunity to have your child manipulate small objects to create something is a chance to flex those imagination muscles.  I highly suggest the Nanoblock standard color set for completely open-minded play.   The creative sets will appeal to the 10-12 age range.

Space Scouts is kid-friendly. Love subscription boxes! savingsinseconds.com

For those of you who enjoy subscription boxes, why not share the fun with your child?  The Space Scouts subscription box is perfect for any space-bound kiddo.  Our first month came in this adorable tin lunchbox, which my son proudly totes around.   The box contained several activities as well as a poster.  Find a place in your child’s room to store the activities from one month to the next because the subsequent deliveries will build upon the previous ones.  That doesn’t bode well for us, since we frequently clean out and donate our used toys.  It will have to be pretty special to hang on to this one.  The activities are geared toward children who are at least 6 years old.  I’d stick with this recommendation unless your 5 year old is an excellent reader. Many of the lessons required good reading skills as well as attention to details.   The pricing for Space Scouts is reasonable at only $11.95 per month.  One thing I wish the site featured is a photo or detailing of future month boxes so that I would know if I wanted to sign up for more.
