I love animals.

I love books.

I don’t usually love animal books.

Crazy how that works, huh?

Fetching Sweetness is an exception to that rule.

The main human character in Fetching Sweetness was literary agent (wanna be) Stephanie Pink. She’s as adorable as her name.  A bologna sandwich-loving wonder, Stephanie had me chuckling on several occasions.  Author Dana Mentink wrote Stephanie’s part in such a way that I could almost hear her thinking aloud.  Part of her charm was her reluctance to lean fully on God while making life choices. How many of us can relate to that scenario?

This book sends a strong message about the desire to follow a dream, but only when it lines up with God’s will.  It’s a far-fetched story that has tender notes of hope, forgiveness, and acceptance of others.  I love the way that Mentink integrated a rambunctious dog, Sweetness, into the story. He provided some comic relief and, well, sweetness.

The only thing that bugs me about Fetching Sweetness is that the cover doesn’t match the book at all!   That probably doesn’t bother most people, but I just imagined the cover completely differently.  The good news is that Fetching Sweetness taught me that you can’t go by the way something looks — you have to trust your heart. And my heart says that this is a book worth reading!
