Our family is looking forward to summer vacation!  It will be here in 10 short days (can you believe that?!) The biggest thing that I want to accomplish this summer is getting my family together for devotions each night.  Right now, we listen to audiobooks on the way to school, but I’m afraid that we’ll get out of that habit once we’re not making the daily commute this summer.  I was really excited when the ESV Family Devotional Bible came in the mail. It’s just what I need to get started on our family devotions!

This full-color Bible is about the size of the Bibles and hymnals in our church pews. The illustrations are very pretty, having almost a Renaissance look to them. Major biblical stories, such as Ruth and Boaz, are featured in two-page layouts with questions for the family.  This helps to bring about meaningful conversation about the story. It will also give you a chance to evaluate your child’s comprehension of the story.

I really like the ESV translation because it provides a word-for-word version of the Greek text.  Our youth minister often uses this translation when he leads the sermon, so my kids will recognize the nuances of the text when he presents it.  Additionally, the back of the text contains maps and an index of devotions.   The only thing that I found lacking was that there are limited footnotes in this particular Bible.  That leaves a lot of responsibility on the family to determine meaning and cultural significance, when they might not be comfortable doing so.
