When I was pregnant for the first time, it used to bother me that my baby seemed most active at night.  It concerned me that she wasn’t moving during the day.  The doctor alleviated my fears by explaining that I just noticed the baby’s movements at night because that’s when my own body was calm and at rest.  That made total sense to me, and I learned to really cherish those moments in the quiet comfort of my bed.  After reading Seeing the Voice of God, I realized that God might speak to me during the day but I’m likely too busy to pay attention to what He is saying.  So again, it makes perfect sense that He would utilize the quiet hours of the night to say what He needs to say to my heart.  Can dreams truly reveal the voice of God?  Author Laura Harris Smith makes a strong argument for that case.

This is not a claim that every dream is a meaningful message from the Almighty.  Many of my dreams are easily attributed to indigestion, reaction to medication, or the overactive imagination of a pregnant woman.  Still, there are a few that stand out as significant in my life.  Those dreams in particular seem to be a quiet voice drawing me to action.  When I dream of a friend whom I haven’t contacted in some time, it makes me feel that God has put that person on my heart and I need to get in touch.  Almost every time I’ve found that the friend truly was in need of a phone call or a card.  In her book Seeing the Voice of God, Laura Harris Smith explains how to interpret certain aspects of dreams.  She shares many of her own dreams and the impact of those messages upon her life.  The book is a sobering reminder that God is persistent; He doesn’t just speak to us and leave us to hope that we’ll listen.  He presents his message time and again. It’s up to us to follow it.

Now, one thing I’d like to make clear is that Seeing the Voice of God has a strong connection to prayer.  It’s not like picking up a vocabulary list and hunting for the cookie-cutter definitions.  Laura Harris Smith clearly relates her dreams as an answer to prayers she’s communicated with God.  That’s not to say that someone outside the Christian church couldn’t have a meaningful message from God in a dream.  I believe that He speaks to us all, whether we’ve accepted Him or not.  It’s just that it’s harder to understand that message when you’re not actively listening for it.  She also paints a vivid picture of the spiritual warfare that is waged via dreams.  If you are cynical about this section, you might miss some really important ways in which God could be speaking through your sleep cycles.  Paying attention to what’s being symbolized in dreams might be the first step to hearing — and seeing — His voice.
