Dream of Miracles

The cover of this book is pretty enough to hang on the wall, isn’t it?  The wonder-filled gaze of Mattie, the story’s main character, belies a simple Amish romance.  A Dream of Miracles is anything but simple!

Although the Englisch world is usually off-limits in Amish novels, it was unavoidable for Mattie.  As she turned first to Englisch doctors, then became even more ensconced in the Englisch world, it was difficult to see how things could turn out for God’s good.  In fact, I became very skeptical of her maternal nature, and wondered about her role in little Nathan’s chronic illness.

Working with children every day, it’s necessary to look out for a child’s well-being.  According to state law, anyone who suspects abuse must notify the authorities without delay.  As I read A Dream of Miracles, I found myself cheering for those who protected the children.  Mattie seemed to be precariously balanced in a tough situation, and could she really be harming her children intentionally?  From social worker Bo’s perspective, it seemed likely.  (I must admit that I was horrified at some of the situations Bo had seen and experienced…so scary and sad!)  There was also the side story of the land dispute, and it caused me to be suspicious as well.  Author Ruth Reid masterfully developed this story to stand out from the crowd.  I wholeheartedly recommend it!
