Disclosure: I received this book for review; opinions shared are mine.

I’ve always loved the written word.  My earliest memories include sitting in our family’s huge papasan chair, snuggled in the soft cushions, reading The Poky Little Puppy with my mom.  When I learned to read, it was like windows to the world opened!  I’ve experienced some losses in the past year, with the passing of both my father and grandfather.  They each left behind a brief but precious record of their lives in journal form.  Though the journals weren’t completed, it was nice to hear just a little bit from these two men who helped me grow up.  It’s a written document that creates a legacy.

In the book My Daughter’s Legacy by Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould, the written word becomes a powerful way to access the past.

I didn’t read the previous 2 books in the series, but it was easy to catch up.  My Daughter’s Legacy spans an intersecting line between two women: Nicole (modern day) and Therese (1864).  This type of story line captivates my attention; it’s like reading two stories in one.  Nicole wasn’t my favorite character in the beginning.  It had nothing to do with the fact that she was a recovering addict.  She came across as being very entitled and spoiled, which bothered me.  I liked the Civil War setting better, and felt that it provided a stronger approach to the story.

Though it would have been an unusual addition to a Christian novel, I so wished for photos!  At the beginning of each chapter, a grayscale fade-out image is used as a header, which was a nice touch. Since the point of view alternates between two characters, the name is given at the top of the page. Images relevant to the story would have really made a big impact.

Throughout My Daughter’s Legacy, there’s a deep connection between faith and actions.  How do we behave when we truly believe in something?  When are we willing to risk it all for our convictions?  What talents do we each possess, and how do we use those to glorify God?  These questions permeate each situation in the story.  The characters suffered pain, yet some were able to acknowledge the blessings that came from those struggles.  If you’re a fan of historical fiction with an engaging backstory, check out My Daughter’s Legacy.

I would love to read this book. In each of the previous Cousins of the Dove books the authors have woven together the stories of ancestors from specific eras that tie them to the modern-day cousins. To understand the contemporary story you have to read the series in order.

  2. That does sound interesting. I’ve started reading historical fiction and enjoyed it. The last I read had gorgeous photos in it, too.
