Lately, my students have been clamoring to read another novel.  It’s tough to find a book that has a unique story line, holds kids’ attention, and doesn’t have inappropriate content or language.  Finally, there are guidelines for text complexity and reading levels that have to be satisfied.  Finding a book takes a lot of work!   Charlie & Frog by Karen Kane is better suited to the elementary school classroom than my middle school class, so I’ll share it with my 9 year old son.

The reader instantly feels compassion for Charlie, who isn’t wanted by any of the adults in his life.  Even his grandparents don’t welcome him with open arms, so poor Charlie has a tough time ahead of him.  Heartstrings tugged? Check.   On the other hand, the inclusion of American Sign Language as a major story detail presents an interesting twist.  The plot opens the door for conversations about acceptance, love, and friendship.

Charlie & Frog reminds me a bit of Roald Dahl’s books.  Things are presented from a child’s perspective, coming off as outlandish and far-fetched.  It has a mysterious charm that keeps the reader guessing.
