Have you ever wondered why we call it Christmas? In the past, my answer would have been, “Because it’s the day Jesus was born.” Yeah, I know that the calendar probably didn’t read DECEMBER 25, AD 1 or anything. Still, it wasn’t really clear to me why we call it Christmas. The cute little DVD cover you see above might look benign, but there’s a whole lot of learning going on in there!
Why Do We Call It Christmas? is chock-full of historical information that’s worthy of a Bible seminary. I mean, do you ever talk to your kids about the Seleucid Empire? I don’t, either. While such an academic-based video might be yawn-worthy, Buck Denver makes it interesting with the antics and accents of the animated characters. Check it out for yourself below:
While this movie ran in its entirety (60 minutes), my kids didn’t pay full attention to it the whole time. I would suggest watching this movie in sections rather than the full length at once. You might consider showing each section at Sunday School in the weeks prior to Christmas, for example. Short spurts will help avoid information overload. It’ll also give you the chance to discuss the video topics with your child. The cartoon is cute enough to be entertaining for kids while the fact-based information is historical enough to hold adults’ attention. Why Do We Call It Christmas? might just become a holiday favorite. No more Holiday Armadillo at our house!
What an important message in a fun movie! I want to see it. 🙂
I’ve never heard of the buck Denver series, but we LOVE Veggietales, so I’m sure it’s super cute 🙂

Telling and explaining to children about the holiday can sometimes be difficult, but with this little movie they can have someone break it all down so they can understand. Great tool.
What a great way to share with children, I myself have some questions, it will help us Adults also.
From the review it tells about so many aspects of Christmas from different areas. It is a great way to teach children about all the meanings of Christmas and where they originated from.
