Buying something at retail? A couponer’s worst nightmare!

I used to go with a friend of mine to a consignment shop that had a $1 tag sale.  We always came home with awesome buys, spending only a few dollars.   After one of our shopping trips, she had a nightmare that she was shopping at the mall, and shirts were all a penny each. She hit the rack for skirts and they were $1 each.  She couldn’t bring herself to buy a skirt because she couldn’t justify spending the equivalent of 100 shirts on the price for one skirt!!   We had a good laugh about that because I knew exactly what she meant.  When you’re living a frugal lifestyle, the retail cost of items can really cause sticker-shock.   Value is a relative term……it’s hard to pay $3.79 for a tube of toothpaste when one is used to getting it for free.

We give my daughter an allowance each week and I usually consider my couponing as the money toward her allowance.  Most of the time I save at least $10 per shopping trip (usually more) so if I leave my coupons at home, that’s money right down the drain.  That’s a couponer’s worst shopping nightmare! My kids know that having a coupon for an item makes it much more likely that I’ll agree to an impulse purchase, so they have learned to look for coupon blinkies in the aisle or even the peelies attached to the product boxes.   <sigh> The kids of a couponer learn early how to save a buck, don’t they?   I really like the new ways that coupons can be sent to a smartphone so that I don’t have to worry about carrying them around.   Michael’s has this option and it’s so nice to be able to just walk in, show my phone, and redeem the coupon!! It’s also a great way to save paper.   If I do print coupons on paper, I try to recycle one-sided junk mail (no addresses) or my kids’ homework papers.  It makes me feel like the coupon was even free-er!

So for your next shopping trip, here are a few new printables that you can take along.  I especially like the kid-friendly ones like the cereal and the gum.    Which coupons do you look for?  And what is your worst frugal-living nightmare?

I sure do love to save money but I **shudder** every time I have to use printer ink. I like your idea about printing coupons on junk mail {I receive lots of that}. 😉

  2. Haha! I know how you feel! Similarly, on items not purchased with coupons, I hate paying full price and then finding the item on sale elsewhere.

My daughter and I feel the pain. My daughter hates it when she’s at the store and can’t find a coupon or knows she could have printed one but didn’t think we’d be buying that product. We go to a clearance aisle, and she loves the price but gets so mad that she could have printed a coupon if she had only known about the sale.
