Why I couldn’t sleep after I binge-watched Stranger Things

stranger-things It’s been a few days since my daughter and I binge-watched Stranger Things. The Netflix show centers around an adolescent cast, much in the same way as Stand By Me and Goonies. In some ways, it reminds me of a teen soap like Gossip Girl or One Tree Hill, with some added horror elements. It was extremely addictive, though.  After we finished watching Season 1, there were some lingering questions that kept me awake most of the night.  (Spoiler alert….though I’ll try to keep the details to a minimum!)

  1.  Was Barb picked off so that the writers could force Nancy to grow closer to Steve, or even Jonathan?  After all, most high school girls would confide in their besties, even when monster-hunting.  Moving Barb out of the way provided motivation to get Nancy involved in the story, but I was disappointed in that plot twist.  I kind of liked Barb.
  2. Would the Byers have to disclose the crazy events from their house if they ever wanted to sell it?  I’m sure the real estate market in Hawkins isn’t  skyrocketing off the charts, but still. Home of the man-eating daisy person?  Portal to the mossy, weird snowing world?  I wonder how that would  in translate in the contract.   And would they stage the house with all that amazing circa-1980’s stuff?  All that nostalgia over a rotary phone and big retro Christmas lightbulbs might seem silly, but it was fun to watch.
  3. How does the science teacher, Mr. Clarke, know so much about weird things like deprivation tanks and parallel universes?  A quick Google search revealed that the isolation tank was invented in 1954. Its inventor was well-known among the hippie crowd, yet much less so within traditional science circles.  Is there more to Mr. Clarke than we realize?
  4.  What kind of skincare does Winona Ryder use?  Seriously. The woman has not aged a day since Edward Scissorhands.   Even in the scenes where she’s been up all night and hasn’t showered for days, she has that natural beauty with gorgeous eyes that charmed decades ago.
  5. Why does Eleven get a nosebleed every time she uses her powers?   Maybe it’s a scientific fact or something.  Did Scully prove it in an X-Files episode I missed?

Have you seen Stranger Things?  If so, what unanswered questions keep you up at night?

My grown daughter and I are going to have to start this. We have both heard great things and both really like the Goonies and the concept. Although, I think we would be up too wondering about the answers.
