Disclosure: I received this book as part of the Irish Banana book tour. Opinions shared are mine.

You know you’re in for a wild ride when it’s only 11:30 AM and you’ve already rearranged your schedule for a book.

The spirited reviews for BEST DAY EVER weren’t off the mark.  This one has a tremendous amount of WHATTHEHECKJUSTHAPPENED-ness.  It even starts out on a strange note, though it’s hard to put a finger on just what’s going on.  Is Paul, the narrator, a sociopath?  Is this word, or that one, a hint of foreshadowing?  I was nervous by the time I got to page 11 when Paul started talking about knowing his wife’s dark side.  What kind of “dastardly alter ego” did this guy have?

Author Kaira Rouda slides in just enough normalcy to give me the willies about this mini-vacay story.  I mean, don’t most guys dread stopping for a potty break during a road trip?  Lots of husbands consider grocery shopping to be a chore, and  Princess Bride quotes are typical for men who grew up in the 80’s.  All of this should be completely benign.  Yet in Paul-speak, these things are somehow creeptastic.  I could almost hear his words slithering into my ears…and it made me want to stop reading, yet KEEP reading to find out what happens next!

Don’t miss BEST DAY EVER, especially if you like intense books that leave your skin crawling and your heart pounding! Note to my “clean book” readers — this book has multiple non-graphic references to alcohol, sex, and violence.
