Music is such a universal language.   Although music wasn’t a big part of my upbringing, it’s become a huge part of my children’s lives.   My husband participated in band as a student and into his early adult years.  We often play music as we clean the house or when driving in the car.   One of my most vivid memories of my daughter is from our mother-daughter trip to Disney World two years ago.  As we passed through the Norway exhibit in the Epcot World Showcase, there was hauntingly beautiful music playing all around us.  I was determined to get us to the next attraction as quickly as possible and didn’t pay much attention to the music.  When I looked down at my daughter, however, she had tears streaming down her face.  I thought she had been injured!!  When I asked her what happened, she turned to me and said, “The music is so beautiful and sad.”   It really struck me at that moment — music has the power to change hearts.  Music lessons don’t have to cost a fortune to be effective and beneficial.  In fact, now is the perfect time to consider music lessons from TakeLessons

As a teacher, I’ve seen the benefits of music lessons over and over, with both my students and my personal children.  From advanced math skills (fractions, anyone?) to time management, music seems to promote the skills that help children become excellent students.  Students who excel in music often demonstrate the best listening skills and problem solving ability in my classes.   In my experience, children who are actively involved in an extracurricular activity are often happier and better manage stress.  When I was a college student, I chose piano lessons as one of my electives.  It was so gratifying to learn how to read music and to master a difficult piece after weeks of practice.  Those moments of success encouraged me to try bigger challenges.   As a parent, I want to help my children develop that intrinsic sense of motivation.   Both of my kids love music and I want to foster that love of learning within them.   My daughter participated in music classes for years, starting at the age of 18 months.  Unfortunately we weren’t able to continue those classes with my son.  I still feel a bit guilty about that because I know he would have loved them!

Since our schedules are so busy and my kids are homebodies (like their mama!)  being able to take an online music course really appealed to our family.  We also live in a town where the demand for music lessons is high but the supply is quite small.   I also have a bit of helicopter mom syndrome and don’t feel comfortable dropping my kids off at a lesson.   Being able to reap the benefits of a private music lesson via the Internet is quite appealing.

We also love music here. I remember one time in the car there was a song playing on the radio and all four of my grandchildren started singing to this song and so I just closed my eyes and listened to them singing. They sounded like angels singing.

Music is something I think everyone should learn. I am trying to learn guitar so that I can teach my kids.

I wish I was more musically inclined. Our neighbor teaches piano, and it is such a wonderful talent. Her children are amazing to listen to. We enjoy going to the concerts. It’s relaxing and just makes you smile. Music lessons teach the kids responsibility and a sense of accomplishment. I hope your children continue to enjoy music even if they aren’t taking lessons.
