What to read with your kids this weekend

Now that school is fully in session, I’m craving a good book like a fish craves water.  Since my time with my kids is limited during the school year, it’s wonderful to be able to read books together.  The Believe Storybook is a great way to wrap up the day with a quick Bible story just before bed. Gentle and gracious, these stories are kid-friendly versions of biblical favorites. The illustrations are lovely, and I liked that the stories were short enough to enjoy several before it was time for lights-out.  The only drawback is my routine-fixated children want to read the entire book (256 pages, if you must know) because they think that’s how you’re supposed to read a bedtime story.  The book’s format is pretty enough for gift giving. It’s a hardback book with glossy, pretty pages.  My son especially loves to read Bible stories that are accompanied by pictures, since he’s such a visual child. It makes me happy that the book challenges kids on varying levels. Younger children will be able to appreciate the “Do,” which is a more concrete concept, while older children can begin to understand the abstract concept of faith. The Believe Storybook is a good supplement to our home library.

If it’s hard to keep the kids busy while you’re waiting at yet another lesson or practice, grab a copy of Laugh Out Loud Pocket Doodles. These books are chock full of cute jokes, but the biggest draw (ha!!) is the half-drawn doodle that begs to be completed. Pair the book with a set of coloring pencils to make an inexpensive get-well gift for that kid who’s home with a cold. The jokes are appropriately cheesy, like you might expect. I love that they’re clean and witty. Each book is surprisingly thick for a joke book. The teacher in me couldn’t help but rear her well-meaning educational head, and notice that the book provides a good learning experience. Kids are asked to create their own “humor code.” This meta-cognition requires kids to consider what makes a good joke, and helps them through the process of finding joke inspiration. Additionally, the joke pages have questions at the bottom that require inference skills. Never thought you’d use a joke book in class, did you? I certainly didn’t!

My daughter recently started middle school, and today she commented that lunchtime is an awkward moment for her. I usually put a little note on her napkin to let her know that I love her, but realized that a page from Pocket Doodles for Girls would make a great conversation starter. Tomorrow, her lunchbox will contain one sheet taken from the book, plus a sharpened pencil so that she can have fun doodling when she finishes her meal. Hopefully the joke will help to break the ice with new friends, and give her something to do if she finds herself outside of the conversation.

Which of these books would you like to share with a child in your life?

I really like the idea of the Laugh out Loud Doodles. I think my grandkids would get into the fun, silliness of finishing the drawings. I know my granddaughter would love the jokes. THis is a cute way to get kids thinking creatively. Plus, would be good for homeschooling, too.

I just commented on this post but had to share because it fits today. Hope that is ok.
Those Laugh Out Loud Doodle Books would be great today…it’s Tell a Joke Day. My granddaughter loves jokes and makes up her own often. What a great way for her to draw what her joke is about and to make up even more jokes about what she draws. 🙂

We begin Family Literacy Month with Family Literacy Day today. You offer lots of books for reading with your kids. Reading is good for bonding and for their education. There are so many good books out there. Believe would offer a great bedtime story each night.
