Disclosure: Thanks to Thunder Bay Press for sending me a copy of The Battles of Tolkien. Opinions shared are mine.

In the early years of our marriage, the hubby and I went to see all of the Lord of the Rings movies together.  The story was so incredible that I read the books, too.  They were hard to push through. The descriptive prose was too much for me at some points.   My fascination with the world of Middle Earth came from the way I imagined Tolkien’s stories.  If you know a Lord of the Rings fan, consider gifting the beautiful Battles of Tolkien book.

The flexibound cover has a leather look, and the rich red color makes the appearance even more striking.  Notice the embossed detail of the cover!  Even the font is Tolkien-esque.

The real treasure lies in the artwork. Inside this book, you’ll find illustrations that bring imagination to life. I’m not an expert on Tolkien’s work, so I can’t vouch for the accuracy of the information.  It isn’t a meticulous work on which to base a research project. Instead, this book contains a basic overview of Tolkien’s mythology.  It’s enough for this casual fan.

Author David Day demonstrates a strong Middle Earth knowledge through his descriptions of the battles, weapons, and more.  The Battles of Tolkien makes a lovely keepsake for someone who enjoyed the books and/or the movies.  Many of the books’ characters are pictures in these pages, some with descriptions of their origins.  This is perfect for the language arts classroom! Many of my 6th grade students read Tolkien for the first time in my class; they will love to have this resource to supplement the books and movies.

The Fellowship of the Rings was first published in July 1954, so it seems appropriate that we have a giveaway for this book in July!  One lucky reader will win a copy of The Battles of Tolkien. The giveaway is open to US readers ages 18+. Void where prohibited by law. Enter on the form below. Good luck!
