A sweet friend of mine suggested that I read the House of Dark Shadows and other Dreamhouse Kings series. Deciding to try it, I ordered the first book. I read it in one night, staying up until the wee hours of the morning hiding under my blankets like I was 9 years old trying to stay up late. It was dang scary!!! I mentioned the book to one of my students, who asked if she could borrow the book. I had already ordered the second book and emailed the author begging to know the answers to the questions that had been rolling around in my brain all night. Of course, he told me which book would reveal the secret I searched for, so I HAD to order it. And I went ahead and ordered the rest of the series, too, so I would have them for the book reading marathon that would soon commence. Meanwhile, the books caught on among my students like wildfire. We’ve been passing them around and all of us have the same dark circles under our eyes, indicators that we’ve stayed up all night reading.
Why do I love this series? Let me count the ways. First of all, it’s a perfect middle grades book. The characters struggle with autonomy, adolescence, sibling issues, and other sure signs of being a teen. Secondly, the book is CLEAN. No worries about bad language or inappropriate scenes. But don’t get me wrong, it’s not a banal cheese fest. Quite the contrary! The Dreamhouse Kings books are downright exciting! The characters are transported to different moments of time, such as a Civil War battle or a gladiator fight in the Colosseum. So amazing. The third thing I love? It’s a series. That means the story doesn’t end with the last page. If you have a middle schooler, young adult, or if you’re just looking for a really great book, you NEED to check this one out. I noticed that several of the books are eligible for Amazon’s 4-for-3 promotion. You can also get a great deal on a few of them, like Timescape which is only $4 and ships free with Prime. Let me tell you, I was thrilled to take advantage of these deals to be able to get the whole series….that way my students and I didn’t have to wait forever to find out what happened!
