My grandmother is the ultimate multi-tasker. She raised six children, helped my grandfather run their small business, plus taught most of the town’s children how to play piano. She had a little corner of her music room that was filled with at least a dozen tote bags. Each bag was filled with the items she needed for that bag’s activity. For instance, she had the Sunday School bag, the piano lesson bag, and the Bible study bag. She often played piano (or sang) for funerals and weddings, so she had separate bags filled with music for those, too. Her organization was amazing and now I can see that it was necessary to her sanity! These days we call all of these bags our “hats.” If you’re like most people these days, you have too many hats on your head all trying to be the one on top. From work to school to church to extra classes, it’s not surprising to know that most people say their hats are getting heavy. So what’s a girl to do?

In The 500 Hats of a Modern-Day Woman, author Joyce Ellis offers a humorous point of view. She suggests ways to balance the hat without losing a single one. Reading this book was like chatting with the lady sitting next to me at yet another baby shower. Ellis writes in a familiar, cozy way much like a grandmother sharing how it was done in her day. Her words encourage women to cut themselves some slack and not take the world so seriously. She supports her opinion with well-documented references and scaffolds her ideas with Bible verses. I didn’t agree with all of Ellis’s comments but could relate to many of her anecdotal stories. Each section has a takeaway thought to carry you through the next hat crisis. The reflection section at the end of the chapters were quite long with multiple verses to look up and consider. Most women probably wouldn’t take the time to look up 8 different verses and reflect upon them; I’d rather see just one relevant thought to keep me going.

Although the book didn’t have any earth-shattering revelations about motherhood or finding myself, it’s comforting to know that Ellis gets it.  She understands why moms often feel exhausted at the end of a long day (or hour) and she gives us permission to feel that way. Are your hats getting heavy?  From the single woman to the married mom of four, if you need a shoulder to lean on, Ellis offers it in The 500 Hats of a Modern-Day Woman.

Sometimes it is just nice to know you aren’t alone and others understand, too. We juggle so many things and have to wear many different “hats.”
