Anchor in the Storm

Sarah Sundin has found her niche in the WWII genre, creating heroines and hunky main men who can’t help but steal your heart. I’ve had the chance to read several of her stories; if you want to catch my reviews just click here. Out of all these titles, Anchor in the Storm has been my favorite.

Lillian Avery was a true woman of the 40’s. Determined and independent, she put herself through college and was willing to go out into the workforce during a time when women weren’t welcomed into men’s jobs. She also persevered despite a handicap, and that helped to distinguish her as the strong woman in the bunch.

I thought it was really interesting to read about the time period when my grandparents grew up. They got married when my grandfather went off to serve in the Navy. Although we joke about him not being able to hear because of his exposure to the guns during WWII, reading Anchor in the Storm made me realize how much he must have gone through as he served. I can’t wait to see him this summer so that I can thank him for his sacrifice. I’ll also be sending my copy of Anchor in the Storm to my grandmother. It just might bring back memories!

Just as with Sundin’s other stories, the setting switches back and forth between the homefront and the war scene. I tend to skip over the battle stories, just because they’re not as interesting to me. I did like Archer, however, and appreciated his desire to move beyond his family’s money. The Christian element was fairly prevalent, with biblical references and exploration of one’s faith being mentioned. Anchor in the Storm shows another side to socioeconomic issues, presenting prejudice from all angles. It’s worth the read!
