Help your daughter get her head above the waves

If you were riding in the van with us this morning, you would have thought I was mother of the year.  My sweet almost-teen daughter and I were sharing beloved worship songs, listening to each other’s music and talking about old favorites like Rich Mullins.  Every once in a while, my son chimed in with his own thoughts about the songs.  Life isn’t always like that for us — it’s just that right now, my daughter’s head is above the waves of life.  It’s inevitable that more storms will bring waves crashing down upon us…..we don’t expect constant happiness.  For now, though, this is enough.  If you’re struggling with your daughter’s life waves, here are some things that might help.

Pray.  Pray.  Pray.  Teach her how to talk to Jesus, and model it in your own life.  Although my kids don’t usually see me on my knees, I do tend to speak in prayer throughout the day.  I talk to God while I cook, while I drive, when I feel upset….people walking by probably think I’m crazy.  It’s rubbing off on the kids, though, and I often hear them say, “Thank you, God!” when something good happens.  Hopefully, this will also translate into “Help me, God” when they need Him.

Get her a good devotional. No matter what her age, there is a devotional for her! We recently checked out this Brave Girls Devotional from Tommy Nelson and found that it has a lot of grown-up appeal while still being appropriate for the younger set.  There are 365 messages — so, one for each day of the year — and plenty of room for her own reflections.  The devotional reads a little like a book because it has specific characters who are mentioned in the topics. Messages of empowerment, acceptance, and unconditional love flow through these pages.  Ask your daughter to take time each day for her devotional, and talk with her about it if she wants!

Listening to music helps us connect, and it’s uplifting at the same time. My daughter’s happy noise is singing.  Having worship songs in her heart and mind gives her constant encouragement.  I often hear her buzzing around the house singing a chorus that we heard in church.  It has NOT always been this way, and I’m grateful for that sound!

What ideas would you suggest to help a girl keep her head above the waves of life?  One lucky reader will win the Winter Wonderland prize package that includes a Brave Girls Devotional, thanks to Tommy Nelson, and a $10 Amazon gift card from Savings in Seconds.   The giveaway is open to US readers ages 18+. Void where prohibited by law. Good luck!  Giveaway ended.
