Just a few days ago, I read a story about a cholera outbreak that spread because of tainted water.

When did you last appreciate clean drinking water?

Since it’s summer, many of us have enjoyed the refreshing coolness of water.  Whether it’s a dip in a swimming pool, a splash from the garden hose, or just an icy cold glass of H20, it’s a miracle and a blessing.  A Daring Venture by Elizabeth Camden brings the story of chlorinated water to life!

Water Chlorine Daring Venture Christian fiction

A biochemist might seem like an unusual main character for a Christian novel, especially a female one.  Rosalind wavers between confidence and uncertainty, battles brutal gossip, and weathers a fierce political war that threatens to cost her dearly.  I can’t say that I particularly liked Rosalind, but I respected her.  She worked hard to get where she was, and she tried her best to do the right thing.  I really wanted her to have a strong maternal figure to look to for guidance, but there wasn’t one anywhere in the book!

If you’re surprised by the biochemist, you’ll probably be taken aback by the plumber-turned-politician Nick Drake.  I tried to root for him, but really just found him to be a little obnoxious.  He constantly threw around his wealth as though it entitled him to be forgiven of all kinds of missteps.  He was so quick to make demands, yet extremely unyielding to anyone who questioned him.

The romance felt so forced and unbelievable that I found myself wishing the relationship would dissolve.  Their relationship was so immediate and totally overdone.  Also, I couldn’t see why Nick found Rosalind so endearing.   She said ridiculous things like, “it’s not good to play with the typhoid.”  He wasn’t really a catch, either, with his wishy-washy loyalties.  The story would probably have been better off without these two becoming entangled.  There wasn’t much of a faith element in the story, so this is more of historical fiction than Christian fiction.

Now, don’t go thinking that I didn’t like the book.   I really did!  I wished that it would have centered more around Dr. Leal and his tremendous courage.  I’ve always thought that indoor plumbing and modern technology was the turning point for disease control, but it’s clear that people like Dr. Leal took important risks to make those things reality.  One thing’s for sure….I am very grateful for the pioneers of science who have the strength to dream!
