Heartbreak Bay by Rachel Caine #StillhouseLake #5

Heartbreak Bay left me gasping for breath as not one but TWO mothers fight for their children’s lives. I loved how Gwen’s family continues to strengthen their bonds despite hardships. I’m torn between wanting peace for Lanny/Connor and also wanting to have more Gwen Proctor tales! This story had some gruesome and terribly sad details. It’s hard to read about bad things happening to kids. I guess the reason Heartbreak Bay has so much power behind it is that Gwen has so much to lose.

I’m torn between my insane delight at the invitation to read a new Stillhouse Lake book, and the guilt of wanting more, more, more from this series. Rachel Caine knows how to entangle her readers in the sticky web of suspense. Though it’s tough to keep a series going, she’s held the thrilling momentum from the start. Bitter Falls is a terrific addition to the series.

One of my best friends at work is an avid reader. She loves edgy, suspenseful books like I do, so we often swap titles with each other. Last month I showed her how to access some of her Amazon Prime perks including the Prime library. I told her the first book she needed to read was Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine, which is currently free for Prime members as part of the 10 books you’re allowed to have at a time. When she walked into my classroom the following Monday, her eyes were wide as saucers. She loved it, and couldn’t wait to read the next one!

Now, I need to reread the whole series again to relive the exhilaration!

A Distant Grave by Sarah Stewart Taylor #MinotaurInfluencers

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Opinions shared are mine.

I’m always up for a suspenseful read that features a strong heroine. At almost 400 pages, A Distant Grave kept me reading for several days but it was worth it! I loved the main character, Maggie D’Arcy, and her tenacious determination. This is the second book about Maggie, and I didn’t read the first. It was easy to catch up on her story, though it sounds like book #1 was pretty good, too.

Black Out by Lisa Unger — Psychological thriller at its best!

Disclosure: Post contains affiliate links. I may earn commission if you make a purchase; opinions shared are mine.

I have a habit of adding zillions of books to my wishlist based on what I’ve heard or read about them, then never getting to actually read the book.  That almost happened with Black Out by Lisa Unger.  At some point, I got this in a book swap and it sat on my shelf for a while.  The copy I received was a mass market paperback with a dull, tatty cover.  I passed it over a time or thirty for its shiny new counterparts that demanded to be reviewed.  Oh, what a treat I almost missed!  This was probably my favorite book from all my spring break reads.  You can get a used copy for as little as 10-cents on Amazon, or get one of these 20 available swap copies. I’m Not a Scaredy Cat, The Delusion, and Killman Creek mini book reviews

Disclosure: I received books for review; post contains affiliate links. Opinions shared are mine.

My husband and I have been binge-watching The Great British Baking Show lately, so my reading time is constantly interrupted by images of sweet treats.  We really need to find a new show that burns more calories. Thankfully, the books I’ve been reading lately are fat-free.
