Though the number of Christmas cards we received has dwindled, there are still a few holdouts who send one faithfully each year. To reciprocate the good cheer, I buy a few cards each year to keep on hand. It used to be easy to earn free gift cards by doing surveys or collecting points through Swagbucks and MyPoints. These days, you can still find ways to get those freebies but it might take a little more creativity! I tend to hoard my gift cards in a little zippered pouch and use them when we’re trying to stick close to a budget. The treat is even more special when I’ve been limiting myself!

My husband is easy to please when it comes to gifts. He appreciates having new socks, a blue tie, or a blue shirt. Simple to do, right? Sometimes, though, he mentions that he’d like to have this or that…and I love to surprise him with it on his birthday or Father’s Day! I’ve always loved to play with fonts and lettering. Before the days of computer imaging, I experimented with various markers and pens to get the results I wanted. Lesson planning is much more fun when I have colorful stickers and tabs to use. It’s a splurge, but I also like to buy myself pens and washi tape to use at school. With the busy back to school season, it can be difficult to get to know your child’s new teacher. I’ve been lucky enough to personally know my children’s teachers since I’ve taught with them for years, so I knew that they liked certain items. I’ve often admired how some artists can freehand a sketch and somehow form a recognizable image. My doodling skills are seriously lacking; to hope for a better result with actual effort is pointless. Brush Pen Illustration is just the type of book a beginner (like me) needs!
