Bridget Jones’s Baby movie is just as good as 1 & 2

Bridget Jones's Baby movie

If you’ve read Savings in Seconds for a while, you know that I love the Bridget Jones movies.  Bridget Jones’s Diary and Bridget Jones – The Edge of Reason just had me laughing, crying, and loving the characters more and more.  My sister called me a couple of months ago to tell me that Bridget Jones was having a baby!   If you haven’t seen/read the second story (The Edge of Reason) you might not know where things left off.  Heck, if you DID read/see the second story, you still might not be sure where things left off!

What do Bedrest, Date Night In, and Bridget Jones all have in common? They all need a good movie.

This post brought to you by Funkyflick Company. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Savings in Seconds.

There have been several times in my life when I felt like Bridget Jones.  All I wanted to do was lay on the couch and watch a movie, have a good cry, and eat lots of chocolate.  There was that time (6 weeks worth) when I was on bedrest and watched about 6 DVDs per day.  My husband had to pick out the movies for me since I wasn’t able to leave the recliner; he came home with 4 movies about The Holocaust.  Seriously. Great Beach Reads – suggestions for summer books

Personally, I don’t like to read while I’m at the beach. I sit staring at the waves, birds, and watching my kids enjoy the moment. When I hear the term “Beach Read,” I usually think of a book that is pure mind candy — something I can pick up and enjoy without too much thought.  For me, books like this are fun to read, lighthearted and witty.   [Read more…]

Calculus of Change by Jessie Hilb

Movie nights aren’t always in the budget, so I’m grateful that my kids enjoy watching at home nearly as much!  In the debut novel The Calculus of Change by Jessie Hilb, main character Aden is my kind of girl.  When she and her friend Marissa had a movie night together and decided between Love Actually and Bridget Jones’s Diary, I did a fist pump.  Colin Firth….Good taste, girls!

What to read this weekend: A Fool and His Monet, It’s Not Too Late

Disclosure: I received these books to review. Post contains affiliate links; opinions shared are mine.

It’s been a while since I posted a What To Read This Weekend list!  Come to think of it, it’s been a while since I’ve read multiple books in a week.  Thank goodness for having Good Friday off, plus starting spring break! In between loads of laundry and filling the dishwasher, I’ve been sneaking in these pages.  Shhh, don’t tell!

Movies to make bed rest more bearable

Disclosure: Post contains affiliate links. Opinions shared are mine.
Movies to make bed rest more bearable - savingsinseconds.com With my first pregnancy, everything went well until my 29 week appointment.  After school, I went to my normal OB/GYN visit only to find that I was in labor! Those back pains I’d been feeling were labor pains, not just general pregnancy discomfort.  They sent me directly to the hospital where the doctor was finally able to stop the progress. As a result, I was required to be on bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy (which turned out to be nearly 5 more weeks).  Laying in an actual bed was too much stress for my body, so I spent all of that time in a recliner.  I could only get up for restroom trips, and even then the contractions threatened to flare up.

My family and friends tried to make bed rest more bearable for me, but it was a really tough time. I was lonely, and working on my National Board Certification took up most of my time. I wasn’t allowed to even get up to get any materials from school, though, so I had to work with the documentation I’d already collected.  Playing hours of solitaire, reading lots of books, and petting the cats also got me through the day. We didn’t have internet at that time, and it was pre-texting days. Having so little to do kind of sounds lovely at this point, but it was like a dark mood at that time.  My husband was tasked with finding me movies to watch, and he trotted off to the video store to collect a few.  He brought home the most depressing titles — Schindler’s List, The Pianist, Steel Magnolias…..I guess he thought “chick flick” meant something to make me cry.  Not what a pregnant mama needs when she’s already down in the dumps!   I realized that today’s bedridden preggo mamas are a LOT younger than me, and might not have seen some of the good comedies from my pregnancy days. So, I put together a list of movies that will help bide your time on bedrest.  Hopefully you have Netflix or Amazon Prime, but if not, no worries.  They’re also pretty affordable on DVD.  [Read more…]

Win the Tacky Sweater Contest hands-down with the help of Tipsy Elves

Disclosure:  I received samples to review. Opinions shared here are 100% mine.

The first time I ever acknowledged a truly tacky Christmas sweater was when I first saw Bridget Jones’ Diary.   Colin Firth could wear a burlap sack and would be just as swoon-worthy (perhaps more so) but this reindeer sweater just takes the fruitcake.   It ranks right up there with Ralphie’s bunny pajamas in The Christmas Story.  Clearly, our culture has serious issues with obligatory wearing of gifted clothing.    What to do if you don’t have an Aunt Clara to gift you a tacky sweater? The easy solution is to buy one from Tipsy Elves!   You still have time to catch the midnight sleigh.  Orders placed today should be received by 12/20.  I can attest to the speedy shipping of the Tipsy Elves.  My order arrived before I could sing Jingle Bells.
