Just look at the cover of Afloat and tell me what emotions it evokes within you. Take your time, I’ll wait.

Whatever you just said, it is probably just one of the emotions you’ll feel when you read this book. If the cover doesn’t catch your attention, you might want to check your pulse. When I looked at it, my heart did a little flutter. It is so eerie, almost spooky. I haven’t read Erin Healy’s books before, but I am starting with Afloat and I won’t finish until I’ve read them all. She has a way with words that makes the story so realistic and tangible that I could almost hear the water lapping against the boat, feel the cold wet clothes the characters wore in the first scene of the story. I’m not sure how she fit it all into a 350-page book, but she did.

Afloat doesn’t seem like a Christian novel at first. If you’re a fan of apocalyptic literature I would especially recommend Afloat. The story starts out feeling like deja vu because there is a suspicious construction accident, seemingly caused by a sinkhole. I’ve heard about sinkholes so often in the recent news that this gave me chills. The story goes through so many twists and turns that it’s difficult to follow at times. Stick with it because the ending is GOOD, very surprising and not at all what I expected. Set aside a few hours for this book because you won’t want to put it down, especially after the first couple of chapters. I would definitely recommend it to any reader who enjoys an intense, suspenseful read (Christian or not.) It’s THAT good; if the biblical references don’t appeal to you, just overlook them. In fact, the spiritual side of the story is integral to the character development, so it almost seems as though it’s just that–part of the story. Furthermore, the story contains so many more important elements. The conflicts between the antagonist and protagonist, the romantic tension that builds up, the mystery within a mystery…….it’s all just part of the intrigue. I wasn’t disappointed by Afloat and I don’t think you will be, either.
