The calendar says I’m nearing the big 4-0.  Sure, it’s a few months away, but someone needs to tell my eyes.  Getting glasses when I was 5 means that I’ve had 34 years of frames in my life.  Some good, some ugly, most were pretty hated because I just don’t like wearing glasses.  The last pair of glasses I purchased are still working as far as lenses go, but the frames aren’t really my favorite.  The nosepads and ear hooks (there’s probably a technical name for those…) aren’t shaped right and so the frames tend to slip off my face periodically.  When I’m reading with my kids and looking down at the book, the glasses tend to slip farther down grandma-style.  I’m not ready for THAT yet!   Being far too busy (read: lazy and cheap) to go to the eye doctor and get a new pair of glasses, this really cramps my style.   Then I found out that Warby Parker has a home try-on program.  Hooray!

Here’s how it works:

  1. Browse various frames at Warby Parker and pick out 5 pairs. They will be shipped to you absolutely free!
  2. Try them on in the comfort of your own home for 5 days. Ask your family & friends what they think
  3. Pick your favorites and purchase them at Warby Parker
  4. Pack up your samples & ship them back for free – no cost involved at all!

This sounds like something I can manage.

Rythmical Rhymes book review at savingsinseconds.com

Speaking of reading books together, what are your favorites to read with your children?  One book that my kids will enjoy this holiday is Rhythmical Rhymes of Biblical Times.  We received this book on Saturday from Litfuse Publicity and enjoyed flipping through the pages. This is a great way to prepare for Sunday worship!  Spend a few minutes reading a story or two with your kids.
The illustrations are cute and whimsical.  Each Bible story is playfully written in verse.  One thing I appreciated about the book was that the pages didn’t have too many lines.  Short stories are perfect for young readers because of several reasons. First, we can squeeze in “just one more!!” and still be in bed on time.  Second, the shorter stories hold my kids’ interest.  And finally, it’s easier for the kids to remember the stories for our family discussions.  Consider donating a copy of this book to your church library or nursery!

The Biblical tales will also appeal to older children.  When reading the Rhythmical Rhymes with your older child, focus on the rich vocabulary. Discuss ways that the illustrations help to tell the story.  You could also introduce literary concepts such as rhyme scheme.  This book offers an opportunity for everyone in your home to enjoy time to grow as a spiritual family.

I can see where kids and adults would get into the fun rhythm of the stories and cute pictures. A great way to get kids wanting to read and learn the Bible. The rhymes would help them remember, too.

  2. My vision changed a lot this year. I’ve always needed correction for distance. But now it’s closeup also, I can’t read without “easy readers” type of glasses.
