Exhausted doesn’t even cover it

It’s the first weekend after the first week back to school. Let’s just say that exhaustion doesn’t even cover it. Last night (and several nights this week) I hit the pillow at 8:00 PM or before. When the kids go back to school, I’ve already been back in the building for a week. For several years now our school system has invited students back on the very first Monday of August. Hard to believe since we used to go back in mid-August! It’s nice to get out in May, though, so my complaints are quite the under-my-breath type.

My feet aren’t used to being in career shoes all day anymore. They’ve become accustomed to flip-flops or even going bare. And my back? Bending over desks all day have me walking like osteoporosis hit early. I’m also teaching a new subject area (Language Arts!!! Hooray for books!) and it’s been a whirlwind of learning for me as well as the students. So this week I took a little break after dinner to read Evergreen by Susan May Warren. I received it to review but it’s been on the counter for a few days until things calmed down.

Evergreen is a Christmas novella about the Christiansen family. This time we get to know the parents behind the romantic young adults. A novella was the perfect size to enjoy this busy week; I finished this book in one night. The basic premise is that the Christiansens are learning to adjust to their empty nest. John dealt with it considerably better than Ingrid did. I found myself siding with John much more often, feeling frustrated with Ingrid’s childish fits. However, as the story takes a difficult turn, I realized that Ingrid and I had more in common than I thought. My husband and I deal with life’s changes in different ways, too, so it was interesting to relate to this couple. Evergreen gave me a little nudge in the good-wife department, reminding me to trust my husband’s intentions when he wants to do what’s best for our family.

In Perfect time The next book on my list was In Perfect Time by Sarah Sundin.  I’d read her book On Distant Shores  last fall and enjoyed the deep relationship of the characters.  In Perfect Time has a similar feel; the characters are again from the WWII nurses story.  The high-stress situations and thrown-together comraderie are a great setting for the inevitable romantic theme.  I absolutely positive loved Roger.  What a good guy!!   Chapter 4 gave me goosebumps all over.  I’ve always felt that my salvation was a gift, a beautiful and precious item that somehow grows in abundance when it is shared.  Roger is the ultimate demonstration of that idea.  Both of the main characters, Roger and Kay, are the unexpected heroes of a Christian fiction novel.  The story itself is quite intense, with Nazi occupation and multiple tours of war.  Additionally, there are dark topics such as rape and child abuse laced within the pages of In Perfect Time.  While it’s definitely not the typical Christian romance, this book is a great finale to the Nightingale series.

Do you need a little something to keep the kids occupied while you’re making dinner? Check out this app–courtesy of the Chick Fil A moms panel! I love the bright colors and engaging activities!

Have a great weekend!

Cute app. Love those fun quizzes. First of August! Wow! I thought mid-August was bad. Whatever happened to summer and going back after Labor Day?! Crazy but I know they get more days off throughout the year. A give and take, I guess. Hope you get a good night sleep. Changing schedules is always crazy and hard.

  2. Thank you for the wonderful review of In Perfect Time! I’m glad you enjoyed it!

I know the school year is in full swing again, and I bet you are working hard. I hope you were able to take some time for you this weekend and read some more books. Thinking of your salvation as a gift to share is a beautiful sentiment and really shows a teacher’s heart. Today is World Teacher’s Day!
