I’ve been reading a lot this summer.  Thank goodness for being a teacher!  Historical fiction is usually my go-to genre and this week I’ve read lots of them.  Be warned.  Books like this just might make you want to take an adventure of your own.  Beautiful historical fiction at its finest, Out Of The Ruins is a delight! Bringing medical history and the earthquakes of California to its pages, this book moves at a pulse-stopping speed. However, the “chapters” are divided up into minutes. It’s amazing how tense such a timeline could be. Although it’s a fictional story, the realistic nature of the story made it so vivid in my mind. Don’t be put off by the 1905 date. The issues brought up in this book are perfectly suited to modern times. For one thing, prejudice hasn’t changed completely in the century since these events took place. Additionally, there were people willing to commit crimes against their neighbors even in those days. Some things never change, though. Things like compassion, love, and the fight to survive are still with us. The little details in this story are what will tug at your heart.
