I’m not sure what I loved more about The Queen’s Handmaid. Was it the fact that we were in 39 B.C.? Finding ourselves in Cleopatra’s court? Traveling to Herod’s court to witness the coming of the Messiah? Or the fact that all this is in a Christian novel so that I didn’t have to worry about bad language or graphic bedroom scenes? All of the above.

The suspense and thrill of those who passed on secret knowledge and wisdom is so real in The Queen’s Handmaid. Corruption, conspiring plots, and love from afar are blended seamlessly in these pages. Herod’s days as a madman are vividly described. The Queen’s Handmaid helped to deepen my understanding of the politics of that period, from Caesar’s court to the Ptolemaic family line.  The “real” characters in history are so well blended with the author’s imagined characters that I had to remind myself that the story was still fiction.  The women in the story play a huge part in carrying out the hidden agenda.  The pages almost dripped with intrigue and deception. So thrilling!

Sometimes in my class I remind my students that freedom is never actually free–someone had to pay the price for our freedom. In the case of the Jews, it’s important to remember how dangerous it must have been for the Jews to pass along secret information in the form of hidden scrolls. The price was paid so that we could know Christ.  The Queen’s Handmaid give an entertaining reminder of the dangers of that turning point in history.  Sound like a book you’d want to read?  Enter the Raining Romance giveaway (through 4/18/14) for your chance to win!
