C. S. Lewis -- QUICK!! What do you think of? savingsinseconds.com

When the name “C. S. Lewis” is dropped, what do you think of?  I’m sure that many people know him as the Narnia author.  While the wonderful magic of the Wardrobe is truly a classic, you might be surprised to learn of his widely varied works.  When I initially learned that Lewis was an atheist-turned-Christian, it surprised me very much. After all, he seemed to know God so intimately!  His writing seemed to be almost inspired!  Shows what I know, right?  That’s what I get for going with a stereotype.   When a college friend encouraged me to watch the movie Shadowlands, the true story about Lewis and his marriage to Joy Davidson, I sobbed for what seemed like hours afterwards.  Still, I had no idea how incredibly tangled the Lewis Web really was until I received The A-Z of C. S. Lewis to review.

This encyclopedia of the life, thoughts, and writings of C. S. Lewis is a great resource for anyone who enjoys his works.  This book would have been immensely helpful when I was studying Christian authors in college!   The book makes clear so many hidden delights in Lewis’s books.  Lewis included such a huge depth of knowledge in his books that it’s amazing!  For example, he used Greek mythology within much of his writing. Author Colin Duriez explains the history behind the mythology then shares how Lewis incorporated the myths in his writings.

This book is an incredible resource for those who enjoy the works of C. S. Lewis.  The individual summaries are extremely easy to read, so they are appropriate for even a middle schooler, yet the information is quite extensive.  Since the entries are in alphabetical order, it’s simple to look up the name you’re trying to find.  Additional cross-references are included as well.  Add this book to your church library or gift it to a friend along with a copy of the Screwtape Letters for a good read.
