Disclosure:   I received this book to review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.

I have a confession to make.

I’m a page skipper.

Whew, I feel so much better getting that off my chest!  My family and friends give me a hard time about it, but it can’t be helped.  Sometimes there are books that I just cannot stand waiting to find out what happens.  When I find myself rushing through the book in order to get to the end, that’s when it’s necessary to skip ahead and just find out already.  Even if I don’t like the ending, the lack of anticipation allows me to enjoy the rest of the story.  As you can probably guess, that’s what happened with A Marriage in Middlebury.  Anita Higman has become one of my favorite authors as you can tell from the reviews I’ve posted about her books.  Her humorous, easygoing writing style just hits the spot with me. The main character, Charlotte, was a kindred spirit from page one.  On the other hand, her long-lost love Sam was a doofus.  I wanted to twist his arm around his back almost immediately because of some of the goofy things that went over his head!

There were several typos throughout the book that bothered me a little bit, mostly because they caused me to lose my concentration and have to re-read the section.  The book went in several directions over the course of the story; it sometimes felt a bit confusing.  I got a little overwhelmed with the amount of back-and-forth that took place. Overall though, this was a fabulous read worthy of the Anita Higman title.  It would be positively divine if a companion cookbook were sold with A Marriage in Middlebury.  After reading about cinnamon rolls, scones, strawberry cake, and other delicacies I was in a snacking mood.  Since we don’t have a lot of fresh baked desserts on hand I had to make do with a bag of Doritos.    Yep, it tasted about as good as that sounds compared to homemade cinnamon rolls.  I did drown my sorrows with a cup of hot Vanilla Caramel tea.  While I skipped ahead in the book, of course.  Consider yourself warned, have a snack ready when you read this book!

Thanks for the review. I understand page skipping. Sometimes the authors get wordy or lost in the details. Typos happen but can definitely be frustrating when they disrupt the flow. I wonder if they will come out with a cookbook later. Sounds like you are right in this being a good cooking companion. Fun!
