Santa always brings my children books at Christmas. This year one of the books my son receives will be Catie’s Secret by Laura Allen Nonemaker. It’s a sweet story of the wonderful differences God creates in this world of ours. My daughter previewed the book for me and said it was very cute. She enjoyed summarizing the story in her own way. Don’t worry that she’ll notice that Santa brings the book for my son; she is in on the secret!
Speaking of secrets, Catie’s Secret is this: what’s on the outside doesn’t really matter. Emerging readers are often in the primary grades and are starting to realize that people look different and come from different backgrounds. Reading Catie’s Secret with your child is a great way to broach these subjects in a child-friendly way. I always appreciate having a visual when talking with my son about abstract concepts like “what’s on the inside is what counts.” Sharing Catie’s Secret together will be a good object lesson. This would be a wonderful book to include in our nursery at church, too.
This book looks great for kids!
