The Inheritance by Michael Phillips – book review #LitfuseReads

Disclosure: I received this book as a Litfuse blogger. Opinions shared are mine.
The Inheritance
As we enter the world of The Inheritance, we’re transformed by the historic connections of the story. This novel spans several decades and geographic locales. Its format is unusual, because it has a horde of one- and two-page chapters. This made the writing feel choppy and stunted.  However, there’s a helpful family tree at the front of the book to make things a bit easier to keep up with. [Read more…]

An Appalachian transplant’s list of books

Disclosure: I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Post contains affiliate links; opinions shared are mine.

If you’ve visited Appalachia, you know the way that the mountains whisper. The mist steals into your soul, and won’t let go until you return. I moved to this area in 1993 and it became my home. My babies were born here; they’re Tennessee natives now. On weekends we enjoy hiking in the hills, and playing in the creeks that abound in this beautiful countryside. The local sights of nature are incredible. For example, one spring evening I saw this triple rainbow above the mountains — it was spectacular, and my cell phone photo does not do it justice!

Dream of Miracles

The cover of this book is pretty enough to hang on the wall, isn’t it?  The wonder-filled gaze of Mattie, the story’s main character, belies a simple Amish romance.  A Dream of Miracles is anything but simple!  [Read more…]

Song of Silence

Here’s another homerun from Cynthia Ruchti!  One of my favorite authors, Ruchti takes everyday characters and turns them into real people we can relate to.  In the book Song of Silence, she creates a spectacular story around a passed-up music teacher and her husband. [Read more…]

Make Family Church Service a Little Bit Easier With An Activity Bag

Make Family Church Service a Little Bit Easier - savingsinseconds.com

Generally, we prefer to attend our church’s early service instead of the later one. We find that it better suits our morning routine, and allows us to enjoy a quiet Sunday more fully.  The downfall for many families is that there are no children’s programs during the early service because few children attend at that time.  Many churches opt for a “Family Service” where the whole family, kids and all, sit together to worship.  The music and special events make that time more of an entertainment hour for kids. My kids prefer sitting with the adults.  However, when it comes to listening to a sermon, little ones may have a tough time sitting quietly.  I remembered that my grandmother used to take a tote bag filled with inexpensive items and toys to keep us happy during a long service.  I decided to try the same thing. Here’s what I put inside my bag! [Read more…]
