Christmas Joy Ride book review - savingsinseconds.com

Melody Carlson outdid herself in this clean, Christmas Thelma-and-Louise style adventure. Pairing two unlikely characters is just the start of the fun. I loved reading about the era-specific decorations! A road trip isn’t the same without making some exciting pit stops, and that’s just what Miranda and Joy did.  The Christmas Joy Ride is a fun-filled story that will make your heart smile!  [Read more…]

The Forgotten Recipe

The Forgotten Recipe - savingsinseconds.com

A few days ago, my mother-in-law had some exciting news. While cleaning out a closet, she found a recipe that she’d thought was lost forever. It was her mother’s carrot cake recipe, a special treat that the family had enjoyed for years. Her mother passed away at a young age, and her recipes were lost as the kids grew older and moved away from home. When my dear mother in law found the recipe, she called her sisters, who all celebrated with her. They plan to get together at some point and make the delicious cake. My husband commented that even after all these years, and after her death, his grandmother’s recipe is still bringing the family together.

Books are like that, too. There’s a magical quality about books that makes readers come together for intelligent discussion, laughter, and sometimes even tears. Books draw a response from the reader’s heart, and help a reader visit an exciting locale without leaving a chair. It’s amazing! In The Forgotten Recipe by Amy Clipston, memories and sadness intermingle for Veronica. When she discovers a mysterious chest in the attic, it’s immediately a moment to remember. It even had an old lock! Sigh. [Read more…]

Some people can prepare for the holidays over the course of a few days, or even weekends.  Since I tend to procrastinate, my holiday preparations are typically completed over the course of a few hours (and usually limited to a Saturday).  This is our first Christmas in our new home, so we’re finding new places for our favorite decor.  From hanging wreaths to reaching into closets, my outfit was stylish and chic, thanks to Monroe and Main!  For my daytime errands and activities, I wore the Crossover Rib Sweater (in cashmere) and the Knit Denim Legging.  It was tough to select my pieces because there were so many items I loved in the Monroe and Main holiday collection.  In the end, I decided to go with pieces that would be comfortable for everyday wear, as well as holiday gatherings. A Thousand Shall Fall book review savingsinseconds.com

Set in the Civil War, A Thousand Shall Fall is a three-dimensional romance. Author Andrea Boeshaar gives both of her main characters a fully developed past, which makes them so realistic that you can almost imagine them as people in your social circle. It took me a while to really get into the book, probably due to the extensive details Boeshaar included to set the stage for the story. [Read more…]

New Mexico Piñon Coffee makes the season bright

Remember that commercial from the 70’s…..a little girl wakes up to the smell of brewing coffee and knows that her big brother is home from college.  I loved that commercial!   Although I do finally drink coffee these days (a must with my long commute), my palate is still very selective about my drink. It has to taste good; I can’t stop at the gas station and drink whatever they have on the hot plate.  Making my own coffee at home is more about preference in flavor rather than saving money, although the latter is a bonus, too!  New Mexico Piñon Coffee arrived at my doorstep, and it was love at first sip.  I was able to try three of their delicious flavor varieties.  One lucky reader will win A Breakfast for Two box, valued at $39.99 in the Happy Holidays Hop!  [Read more…]

Each year, Santa brings my kids books. He must really like to read! The books are always welcome at our house, but especially on Christmas since they are a way to settle in for a quiet afternoon after the frantic paper-ripping on Christmas morning. Here are some Santa-worthy stocking stuffer ideas in book form.

Power Up! devotionals savingsinseconds.com
Power Up! is a devotional book specifically for girls. Through vignettes and personal experiences, each page shares a story about a female athlete. I wouldn’t have realized that these were all stories about girls if the cover hadn’t been so obvious. I plan to pass the book along to the FCA sponsor at my school; it’s the perfect resource for those who need a story to share during a moment of reflection. I liked that many sports were represented in the book. From golf to tennis to basketball, there were athletes from every background and experience. [Read more…]
