Motherless by Erin Healy does not disappoint!

Disclosure: I received this book to review. Opinions shared here are 100% mine.

For a thought-provoking book that takes me for a mental ride, Erin Healy is one of my favorite authors.  Maybe it’s that my brain capacity can’t take the heat, but sometimes I have no idea what Healy is working around to until the very, very end (and sometimes not even then).  WOW.  Her newest title, Motherless, did not disappoint!

Small Talk by Amy Julia Becker — for those tough questions kids seem to ask

Small Talk book review - savingsinseconds.com

If there’s one thing I did right in my role as a mom, it is to encourage my kids to talk with me about anything. I might cringe inside at their questions, at the shattering of their innocence when a curse word passes their rosebud lips. It might make my heart break a tiny bit when my daughter wonders aloud why her body is shaped differently than the rest of the girls in her class. When my son asks why his friend wouldn’t play with him today, can I withhold my stinging words about the boy’s mother who tried to avoid us at afterschool pickup yesterday? It’s so tough to answer those open, honest, raw questions with the words that make it all better. It’s even harder to believe those gentle words sometimes. Amy Julia Becker, author of Small Talk, does a great job of presenting her own experiences as a mom with question-laden kids. [Read more…]

Hilltop Sunset by Joyce T. Strand – book review and tour

Disclosure: I received this book to review. The post contains affiliate links; opinions shared here are 100% mine.

If you’re a wine connoisseur, this book might just appeal to you.  Set in the vineyards of California, we get to explore the lifestyle of the thirty-somethings who have made lots of money from the upper crust.     When I started reading this book, I felt as though I had walked into the wrong movie theater after going to the concession stand.  There was a lot of background information that I must have missed.  Although it all becomes clear in time, the stall prevented me from really getting hooked on the book.  Before you read Hilltop Sunset, I’d highly suggest reading the first book so that you know what’s going on.  Overall, I’d rate Hilltop Sunset a 4.
The main character, Brynn, just went through an amicable divorce.  In fact, it was so amicable that she went on a little overnight trip with her ex to celebrate.  It was all very surreal.  When I finally connected with the characters, I really became interested in the mystery behind Hilltop Sunset.  I kept wondering about the “Inspired by Actual Events” on the front of the book. What was real and what was fiction?  It’s difficult to say because the book was so realistic!

Let your child fly high with these toy ideas #giftguide

Disclosure: I received products samples; the opinions shared here are 100% mine.

There’s something so intriguing about space. That unknown frontier is still a mystery and inspiration to all of us. Even from a young age, children are enamored with looking up into the sky and wondering about the great beyond.  If you have a child who likes to fly high, here are some gift ideas that will delight, entertain, and educate your little flyer!

The first gift my son asked for this Christmas was a remote controlled helicopter.  We got one when he was only 3 years old and he loved playing with it; unfortunately it crash-landed and didn’t work properly after that.  This year he’ll receive the Silverlit Nano Falcon.  This heli is especially cool because it’s a record-holder for the smallest RC copter.  [Read more…]

Save time and money with the Ziploc® Vacuum Sealer System - #sponsored #ad savingsinseconds.com

One of the biggest budget busters in the Savings in Seconds house is wasted food.  I always have the best of intentions when going in with my shopping list; that boneless chicken breast or 3-lb bag of fresh peppers truly does have a place on my meal plan.  As the week goes on, however, there are days when the meal doesn’t get prepared or the leftovers get stashed in the fridge just a little too long.  The next dilemma we usually face is trying to find a plastic container and its lid.  I really do think they run and hide, giggling in the back of the cabinet, because we never seem to find one!  I’ve wanted a Ziploc® Brand Vacuum Sealer System for ages because I’ve heard that they really help to save time and money.   [Read more…]

Sequels that you can read as standalone novels

Disclosure: I received these books to review. The post contains affiliate links; opinions shared here are 100% mine.

There are times when I pick up the second book, or even third, in a series and just have to read it.  Usually it’s because the second book is free on Kindle that day or some other odd situation. That’s sometimes a problem when the first book provides a strong background that doesn’t transfer to the second installment.  Some sequels work as standalone novels, though. These titles work for those days when you just want a new book and don’t have the first one available!

My favorite is A Lady at Willowgrove Hall.  It’s the third in the Whispers on the Moors series but you won’t really notice because it’s so good on its own. [Read more…]

A few weeks ago, our TVs stopped working. We pay our bills online and hadn’t read the letters sent from the cable company informing us that cable access would only be provided through a box for each individual TV. You can imagine the arguments that ensued when each member of the family wanted to justify their show preference to dominate the one television that worked! My sweet husband went to bed early several nights because his beloved bedroom television no longer aired his favorite show, Oak Island. He’s a hardworking man and easily earned this one little pleasure; TV gives him a chance to unwind. This year, he absolutely deserves the LG OLED TV from Best Buy. [Read more…]
