For us, having great hair in 2013 comes down to the tools we use.

I’m always looking for ways to shorten my beauty routine.  I want to get good results in less time.  With two little ones to get ready in the morning, I have to get up at least an hour before the rest of the family in order to have time for my shower, style my hair, put on makeup, and see if my selected outfit still fits.  Shaving off even five minutes of that time is a blessing!  A few days ago, I got my hair cut (about four inches off all around) to get it looking healthy again but also in hopes of making it easier to style in the morning.  Unfortunately my hair is very wavy and I never know how it’s going to behave.  My daughter has the same issue.  Here’s what her bedhead looked like this morning:

All that wave is gorgeous yet maddening!  There is no get-up-and-go with this head of hair, it just has to be styled.  Thankfully we just received some new beauty products from Flat Iron Experts to try. We received a flat iron, thermal shine spray, and an iron holder. [Read more…]

Fun facts about New Year’s

What are your New Year’s Eve plans? Our family usually tries to stay together, watching a movie at home or at our friend’s house. We are pretty low key. I always love a bit of trivia, and  these Wild Facts About New Year would make a great conversation starter at your get-together!

You could turn these into a game by making the trivia true-or-false, or changing them up a bit. For example, write the facts on an index card and leave the “main” answer blank. Let the players fill in the blank, and if they guess the right answer give them a prize! You can also add in these fun facts:  Wackiest New Year’s Eve Ball Drops.

On My Bookshelf: Where God Finds You

Where God Finds You by Anita Higman is a book that really spoke to my heart.  Each chapter is only a few pages long, so it was easy to incorporate into my daily reading.  There are 40 Biblical stories that bring Biblical characters to life.   Some of these characters are unnamed in the Bible, such as the woman who touches Jesus’ cloak, yet their personal stories are completely reflective of their lives.  Higman makes the story relevant to today’s reader by adding a personal note at the end of each chapter.   Take the time to respond to the discussion questions.  Like my students, I want to skip over the “think about it” questions because I don’t want to take the time to internalize the message.   Don’t make that mistake with this book. These questions are the delectable dessert at the end of a wonderful meal.   The most important part of this devotional is the take-home thought, realizing that the message DOES apply to me. On My Bookshelf: Bumptabulous

If you are the parent of a child, you have joined the club. It’s a rite of passage that only moms can understand. The ability to be interested in someone else’s bowel movements, the self-discipline to clean up someone’s vomit without throwing up yourself, the desire to stay up all night to hear a tiny person’s quiet breathing….all of these are moments of motherhood.  In Bumptabulous: 20 Moms Expose Pregnancy, twenty moms share their stories from the miraculous (and sometimes surprising) discoveries of conception to the indiscreet experience of hemorrhoids.   The stories these moms share are stinkin’ funny and can only be believed if you have experienced some of it yourself.   For example, when one mom realizes that she MIGHT have washed her hands as recently as early 2010.  When you’re in the delirious first weeks of your baby’s arrival, things like washing your hands or shaving under your arms take little precedence over closing your eyelids for a few moments.  And why do people think it’s okay to touch your belly when you’re pregnant?  It’s NEVER okay to touch my stomach, especially if I don’t know you.   I do think that Bumptabulous would be more interesting to moms who have already experienced childbirth.  After all, the inevitable “big day” is scary enough without reading someone else’s horror stories. Thrifty Thursday: Save on pet medications

A few weeks ago I was at our vet’s office picking up our dog who was being boarded there.  The office was uncharacteristically busy and there were at least ten people in line.  I saw an acquaintance and we chatted for a few minutes.  She said she had been sitting in the office for almost two hours waiting for a refill on her dog’s medication.   Now, I am all for supporting local small businesses, but I don’t have two hours of spare time to sit in a waiting room for my dog’s medication.  I told her that many pharmacies in our area fill pet medications too, and she was shocked.  I know that I’ve seen a sign for it at the Kroger pharmacy, and after checking the Walgreens website I saw that they also fill pet prescriptions. My guess would be that filling the prescription at these bigger-name pharmacies would also offer some savings on the medication as well (although I don’t know that for sure.) [Read more…]
